HOWTO: Set up msn under ubuntu using Gajim

This is an alternative to Gaim. It may be slightly harder to set up but I prefer it as it has some nice features such as being able to set your status by right clicking the status bar icon.

1. Download and install gajim from synaptic or using apt:

sudo apt-get install gajim

2. Set up an account on the jabber.ru server using Edit>Accounts -> New

• Make sure the register new account box is ticked
• JabberID = <username>@jabber.ru
• choose a password and check the box
• connection tab - tick use a custom hostname/port
• hostname = jabber.ru
• port = 5222

3. Save the account and connect to it.

4. Right click on it on the main contact window and select Service Discovery

5. Select the MSN transport or gateway in the list

6. Fill in your details in the window and it should connect whenever you connect the jabber account.

Thanks for the instructions. I found two major drawbacks:

• I had to approve all my contact list members, and I have a lot therefore was quite an initial annoyance. That is no problem now though.
• File transfer doesn't seem to work, that is a major drawback. Is there a way arount?

I am sorry that you do not find the instructions I wrote for connecting to MSN using Gajim in Ubuntu 5.04 work in Ubuntu 8.04. I personally no longer use Gajim in any manner and have not done so for some time.

If you seriously wish to connect to MSN through Gajim in particular then I suggest you look into any documentation the Gajim project supplies. If you do not mind which application you use then Pidgin is a great multiprotocol IM client which is easy to set up with MSN.

If you have any further problems with this or with any other issue then I recommend you check your posts for any possibly insulting content. It is less likely to get a positive reply and does not contribute anything of any value to the community.

Hiya,

Nice guide, except when I get to stage 5 I see no MSN transport or gateway. Just under Transports, there's Mail.ru IM and that's it... No MSN.

Have I missed something here?
