Re: Cedega

Cedega isn't Wine right?

How does it compare to Wine? I'm curious too.

Re: Cedega

No it is not wine. What I read on the website is that you can play windows game in a Linux environment. I just don't know how well it would work in Ubuntu 7.10 i386.

Re: Cedega

Wine is a linux program that from my understanding attempts to rebuild the primary libraries that Windows programs repeatedly use. It is free & open source. Wine has no installer gui, per se, though some programs like Wine-Doors (http://www.wine-doors.org/wordpress/) and PlayOnLinux (http://www.playonlinux.com/en/) attempt to make common games and programs easily installable through a graphical interface, but are not perfect or officially affiliated with Wine and of course do not show even close to all that wine can install, just a select group of stuff.

WineX was spun off of the Wine project, and later renamed to Cedega to get rid of the confusion concerning the two. It is proprietary, and closed source I believe, because the company works with the people who make cd protection software in order to make their product get around some games' protection schemes that Wine cannot. Cedega costs something like 5 dollars a month for a minimum of 3 months. You can use the program after that however long you want, but you can't update it after those 3 months are over unless you pay for the next month(s?). There is source code for WineX/Cedega-CVS around that is available to download and install legally, but it's kind of a pain, outdated, and not worth the effort.

A similar project spun off Wine is Crossover Office. However, Cedega is made primarily for games, and Crossover office.. well, duh. It costs something like 40$.

All of the above programs work fine on ubuntu. If you want to see compatibility list stuff, see these websites:

WINE (NOTE: when you look up a game or program, look at the version that is listed under how good the program works in wine! many of the wine compatibility pages are outdated. the newest version as of this writing is 0.9.55)
http://appdb.winehq.org/appbrowse.php

CEDEGA (NOTE: the playability ratings are misleading, they are the average of all of the ratings given. when you view a game, click on "view this games rating statistics" to see a better estimate of how well it plays on cedega via checking the stars for each version instead of the average)
http://games.cedega.com/gamesdb/

CROSSOVER OFFICE (NOTE: same comment as WINE above)

Re: Cedega

A good comparison of playing Wine games vs Cedega games is comparing the Wine appdb vs the Cedega Wiki. Make sure you read the entire comments about each game to get a fair comparison.

Re: Cedega

I have used Cedega for years and no I can't recommend anyone buying it. Most games doesn't run and those that do mostly runs badly. The only reason I have continued subscribing is cause I want the development to continue and I can afford it. If I really want to play a game, I'll wait for the Linux version .
