Snow in virtual desktop, graphical glitches

I just reinstalled Ubuntu on my system, as I was throwing my hands up in despair of fixing a couple of issues that had appeared over time.
Added wine again, tried to run City of Heroes with the settings i'd used before. Immediate problems - the 'virtual desktop' which I remembered being a blue color was now an uncomfortable riot of blueish static buzzing at me continually; when I ran the program most things just didn't draw, or drew very irregularly, rendering it fully unplayable rather than 'playable with issues' as it had been before. Since Winecfg also gives the same snow, I presume something is awry either in the wine install, or in my graphics. Has anyone any tips on how I might troubleshoot this?

Edit: SOLVED, I removed Wine, then installed it from the WINE repository instead of whatever version was in the Ubuntu repositories.
