Re: How to UBUNTU on ASUS G1s

I've been having trouble with NetworkManager on my laptop. When I lose a connection due to:
1. going out of range/too much interference
2. after suspend/hibernate and resume
I'm unable to reconnect. dmesg says "wlan0: link is not ready", but I haven't found any useful suggestions on how to fix this.

So I did some searching and found wicd (pronounced wicked). It seems to work much better on the G1s than NetworkManager, but seems to be a little less mature of a project. Check it out at wicd.sourceforge.net.

wicd will re-connect properly after it looses a signal, and can keep multiple encryption schemes for one network name (ESSID), because it will identify networks based on the access point's MAC address.

Thanks i will try it out... since we are in the subject, i have never been able to log on any encrypted network. I go to the University of Toronto and not once have i been able to log on to the wireless network. Also, i tried the ryerson wireless, still a no go.

the only way i got on the network is following the instructions on here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=334120

i got to log on for a few minutes on utorwin (university of Toronto wireless network) then it never connected again.
note: both ryerson and U of T need pass phrases to log on, then a user name to use the internet.
I will try wicd and see if it somehow solves this problem.

Thanks,
HoMie_G

Re: How to UBUNTU on ASUS G1s

Sorry, looks like I was wrong, I'm still sometimes having the same issue when I go out of range of the wireless network.

As far as connecting to a wireless network with encryption on network manager, if you are using WEP, you may have to specify that you are using an ASCII key (if you are using one). At my University I can't just say WEP passphrase, and it works, I have to specify WEP Hex, or WEP ASCII and enter the corresponding key.
You may have to specify the same way with WPA

On wicd, it will scan for networks, and give you a list of all of the networks it sees (similar to the Windows XP wireless applet).
In order to use encryption on any network, you must go into the drop-down menu for the network (here you can check off the "connect to this network automatically" checkbox)
Then the "Advanced Settings" drop-down, check off the "Use Encryption" checkbox, select the type of encryption that the network uses (WPA1/2, WEP and various other schemes)
Type the network key into the textbox.
Finally, you can collapse both drop down menus, and click the "Connect" hyperlink (the blue letters). This will connect you to the selected network.

Re: How to UBUNTU on ASUS G1s

Never mind, apparently when you install wicd, the network manager uninstalls. if you want it back you have to reinstall it. i think im going to try out wicd for a bit first though.

to check the network manager

Code:
nm-applet
to install it

Code:
sudo apt-get install network-manager-gnome
Peace,

I found that if you remove the gnome shortcut keys for Play/Pause, Stop, Skip to next track, and skip to previous track, then re-add the keys in amarok's global shortcuts, it will work.

To do so, use System -> Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts. A Gnome preferences window will come up.
Then pretend that you are going to assign a new shortcut to each of these keys, but hit backspace instead of assigning a key. This will remove the assignment.
Next start up Amarok, and assign the media buttons to the intended keys. You may or may not have to restart Amarok after you assign these keys.
I had to restart, but I had Amarok running when I was removing Gnome's shortcut keys.

Re: How to UBUNTU on ASUS G1s

alright I've finally fixed my issues with my wireless not working after I go out of range. What happens is that I will go out of range of an access point, and when I am in range of another on the same network, my laptop will not re-associate to the network.

I just have to reload the iwl4965 driver using the following commands:
Code:
# sudo modprobe -r iwl4965
# sudo modprobe iwl4965
The problem is I haven't found a good place to put this to fix my wireless automatically. For now I've put the attached shell script on my desktop and just run it whenever I have this problem. Note that it uses gksu in order to get the permissions required to reload the modules.

Re: How to UBUNTU on ASUS G1s

Hey guys!

I found a wiki, specifically for the G1S line of laptops. It's at http://asusg1s.wikidot.com/. I've been porting the stuff we've been talking about here to the Ubuntu part of the wiki. Feel free to help out!

Re: How to UBUNTU on ASUS G1s

Hello there guys!

I have a G1s, and i'm new on ubuntu, so I tried your posts to see if I could manage to install g1s at 100%.

All things have worked perfectly!!!

However, got 1 question for you:

It's my mistake or the sound is to low? Even when you push it to top... yeah, it's high, but in XP, doesn't use to play higher?

Many thanks and keep up the good work!!!
