Targus PAKP003 Mouse/Keypad set doesn't communicate via USB cable or wireless

Yesterday I put down 50 bones on a Targus Wireless Optical Mouse / Keypad set. The box was very explicit about that fact that no drivers were required, so I figured I'd be safe.

*buzz*

The devices won't even setup IDs with the wireless receiver. I tried using them with USB cable in order to circumvent the receiver, but that doesn't work, either.

The information on the Internet concerning this package's operability under linux is pretty Slackware-centric, and running through the suggested steps doesn't get me anywhere.

If you've had experience with this hardware and got it working under Ubuntu, I'd very much appreciate your input.
