I need a simple yet fully functional text editor to code applications in C++.
gedit is nice, but I need a color scheme with more contrast. Oblivion theme is ok, but still not enough. Maybe slightly more contrast would be perfect.

I like eMacs.
Quick download and it gives you the colour scheme for just about any language you want to code in.
Lots of shortcut keys as well.

Geany's mostly for Python, I feel. Gedit is pretty good, actually, and yes, Emacs or XEmacs are good choices, though a little heavy. If you can get used to Vim, that's of course the perfect choice .
Yeah, Vim is great, but I could never get used to it.

What about SciTE? It's available in the repo's
I'd rather use something easy to use but with better themes support.
Vim would be the best for long term, heavy duty stuff. The learning curve is steep.
Sciete or Bluefish
