I love the Open Source / Free Software community. It's full of great ideas, innovative designs, and probably the most helpful group of people I've ever met.
However, there's a gripe I've got about both GNOME and KDE apps. The problem is getting better, but it needs the help of a community:
Names. There are dozens of projects out there with GNU(partofwordhere), K(Somethingorother), g(application), GNOME (Program), it goes on.
While this is certainly not a judgement against ANY FOSS developers, it's...boring. As a day-to-day user, I've kind of noticed that it's kind of hard to appreciate a program sometimes when it has a supergeneric name. So, I figure, why not post suggestions for names for future projects? There's TONS of people out there with great names, but no time to develop an app, and vice versa.
I'll start, here's some of my suggestions:
-Propensity (A word here meaning "It is what it is."): Could be some sort of file identification system or something.
-Seeker: A name for a web browser.
-Sprechen ("Speak" in German): Could be a name for an IM client.
-Dispatch: Could be a name for an Outlook alternative.
-Venice: Some sort of art program.
-Pence: A money tracking program of some sort.
-Bloodline: A family history charting app.
-Branch: Another family history charting app name.
-Revolver: Some kind of media player(?)
-Quill: Either a note-taking program, or a Word Processor.
-Ovation: Presentation app.
-Excess: File resource manager.
-Cochlea: Sound management app.
-Pupil: Teacher/student app.
-Cortex: Educational Suite.
-WindWalker: A site creation app.
-Infinity: A memory storage system?
Those are a few ideas. Go ahead, suggest some! Maybe a developer will happen across these and see one he likes!
