I'm using Ubuntu Server 10.04.4 LTS to host VMs using KVM. I'm using TightVNC over ssh to access the desktop of the Guests. But I'm disappointed with the video resolution of the guests, it appears, after reading the libvirt documentation that the best KVM can ever do is 1024 x 768. Both the physical host and the laptop used to View the guests can handle a much higher screen resolution.

The problem is that I want to experiment with software development on the Guests and thus would like as much screen real estate as possible, and definitely more than 1024x768. Does this get any better with Precise? (12.04)?

Or should I just abandon KVM for Virtual Box or something else? This is a personal project so I'm not able to spend money on license(s) for commercial software.
