Samsung 226BW problems

Hi, I've just bought a Samsung 226bw 22 inch monitor to replace my old Philips monitor which died on me. I have a number of problems:-

1 It's displaying too bright.
2 The colours are off (I had these two problems with my old monitor when I installed Gutsy a few months back which is why I switched to an earlier version)
3 Pictures/video images are stretched
4 I can't display the 1680 x 1050 resolution

I have a ATI Radeon Xpress 200 graphics card.

I've been trying some ideas posted in other threads and all I've managed to do is remove some of my screen resolution options so now I'm worse off than I was before (I'd used this command:- sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg).

I am a noob. I am clueless. And any help would be gratefully received.
