Oh come on, the thing is still in the testing stages. Why make their testing even harder by peering with a bunch of possibly fly-by-night servers? That's the problem with the Jabber protocol...theoretically I could set it up on my server here (I'm actually thinking of setting it up at work). It's also not the first closed implementation. You'd be surprised how many sites use a Jabber backend for web-based chat programs (especially personals sites). All of these are closed. Google has come out and stated that they might be peering in the future with some of the big ones. Give them time to make sure everything is working local first.

And once they peer with jabber.org they're basically in the full Jabber net...one can get to the other Jabber servers through jabber.org.

Read it earlier today. Agree with some of the opinions about IM in general, but it's just silly to twist it that way, like it's the finished set-in-stone product and this is how it will forever be. It's a beta, just recently released for the first time so that people can try it out and ask for changes.

Either it's just getting cheap hits from the /. crowd or it's ignorance of the need for testing and feedback and especially agile development philosophies. Or both.

Google Talk may or may not turn out to be a great and open product, but that remains to be seen - at least months before anything conclusive can be said. However, if you have these opinions, how about telling them to the guys that make the product instead? What if they listen?
