Dell UK Ubuntu Laptop no longer available?

I ordered an Inspiron 6400n from Dell UK yesterday and I got a mail today saying this:

We’re unable to process your Dell Order – as the product you have ordered is no longer available.

I know that there was going to be a delay, but I wanted to support Dell in their supply of linux preinstalled systems, and I don't really want to buy a copy of windows just to throw it away.

Has anyone else seen anything about this? Is it to do with the popularity of this offering or something more disappointing?

Re: Dell UK Ubuntu Laptop no longer available?

I'd like to think that it's not something disappointing, but my conversation with Dell (Australia) last week leaves me little hope that they're serious about providing an alternative to Windows, rather than a publicity stunt.

Conversation went something like
Me: I wanted to know when you will be releasing laptops with Ubuntu as the OS in Australia, as I want a new laptop, and would be happy to wait a few months if you're planning on selling these
Dell: We have no plans to release this
Me: Can I ask why that is?
Dell: the Ubuntu is only in English

yes. Indeed.

So good luck. Personally, we've just ordered a Vista laptop, to install Ubuntu ourselves.

Re: Dell UK Ubuntu Laptop no longer available?

I have contacted Dell for assistnace with my config issues I have had with my older Dell laptop switching over to Ubuntu, and they have been moer than helpful...and while I was on the phone with them the gentelman informed me that they do still in fact have the Dell laptops for sell in the UK but they are different model numbers but he said they did still have them for sale there. Also another option you guys could look into is ordering them from Dell in the US, as that is what a few of us have had to do (we are currently stationed @ Ramstein AB, Germany) I know that they are still offereing the pre-installed Dell's here in Europe so I don't see why they wouldn't offer them in Australia...I think u just ended up talking to someone who didn't know or doesn't give a crap....

Problem with that is you don't get a UK keyboard... but I guess you could change it afterwards, but that is extra cost.

You could change the keyboard out...they are not that expensive really...and that would be an expense i would be willing to pay to get the setup I wanted...then u could sell the old keyboard on ebay or something to make back some kind of money...

Yep that's the desktop variant, dash it all I wanted that laptop.

The website for the laptop link now just sits and cycles trying to load up.

Sorry you didn't get a good response I was vey hopeful of Dell jumping into this wholeheartedly. It could still be that the demand has been unprecedented and they can't keep up, hopefully they will offer other models soon.

I might do what you've done and just buy a windows lappy and put Ubuntu on it, I just didn't want to give Bill and co any more money
