Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron
laptop harddrive Load_Cycle_Count issue

Don't apply any unofficial ugly fixes unless you understand what you are doing and you understand how to revert. Only apply this fix if you are heavily affected. After applying this fix keep an eye on your Load_Cycle_Count and on your harddrive temperate and make sure it remains below the maximum temperature specification of your harddrive. Everything you do is on your own risk.

laptop harddrive Load_Cycle_Count issue

After the bug found in the kernel that feisty uses which causes your hardrive to make a pop sound when it shuts down , i have been hessitant to install ubuntu on my laptop.

i did install gutsy beta, but suspend/hibernate dont work which are really important and i could help to notice that my hardrive was making noise. the hardrive is being accessed every 10 seconds without me doing anything and it has a weird noise to it. with XP on the same laptop i dont hear anything, not even when im accessing files.

whats going on with ubuntu on laptops, why does it run so crappy compared to the desktop.

Re: Is ubuntu killing our laptops hardrives ?

to be dead honest, i have had no such problems with my laptop. so it could just be a problem with your laptop, or with the make of harddrive. but as for running ubuntu on a laptop, mine runs like a dream. and there are plenty of other people who also run ubuntu on their laptops without problems.

Re: Is ubuntu killing our laptops hardrives ?

I've never heard about abug in the kernel cause a hard drive pop, and never heard it happen on my laptop. Why do you think this problem exists? Is there any confirmation from kernel devs? I'd recommend backing up your data because you're hard drive may be dying if you are hearing sounds like that.

The bug referred to can be found here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s....17/+bug/67810

Doesn't seem to be much to worry about - just annoying.

Re: Is ubuntu killing our laptops hardrives ?

hello,

I have the same 'click' noise when shutting down my IBM T41 running Feisty. I read somewhere (can't remember where :-/) that it _may_ harm the harddrive.

Red face Re: Is ubuntu killing our laptops hardrives ?

sudo smartctl --device=ata --attributes /dev/sda

Power-Off_Retract_Count = 379 [Makes a perfect number for a 5 month Ubuntu usage.]

Anyone else ? Basically all feisty users should have been affected by this ?
If Gutsy solved the problem , the counter should be more or less stable from now on ..

Lets see.

I finally wrote about the two bugs here.

If you read the launchpad link above, there is a temporary fix to stop the spin-up/power-off:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...10/comments/60

I will be trying this when I get home tonight.

Re: Is ubuntu killing our laptops hardrives ?

Just checked , Although there is no "click" or "pop" sound , but Power-Off_Retract_Count has increased on shutdown. [380]

Let me try that fix and report again ..
