Question mythfrontend playback causes gdm restart, using fglrx - ATI Radeon X600

I have a Hauppauge DVB-T and Radeon X600 that's causing a gdm restart (return to login page) when I attempt playback or watch live TV in mythfrontend, on a week-old clean install of Ubuntu feisty, tweaked a fair bit, and now upgraded to gutsy.

    mythfrontend.log says:

    Code:
2007-10-21 08:36:22.263 VideoOutputXv: XvMCTex: Init failed
2007-10-21 08:36:22.263 VideoOutputXv: XVideo Adaptor Name: 'Xgl Generic Texture Video'
mythfrontend.real: Fatal IO error: client killed
    glxinfo says:

    Code:
    harvest@dell5100:~$ LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo
    name of display: :1.0
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":1.0".
    libGL error: XF86DRIQueryDirectRenderingCapable failed
    ...
I had the same problem with mythtvfrontend on openSuSE 10.2, so probably my hardware?

First of all, I was wondering if anyone knew a basic command line to test my driver setup. Like xawtv or mplayer?

    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

Re: mythfrontend playback causes gdm restart, using fglrx - ATI Radeon X600

FYI, my xorg.conf is below. I get the same error with Composite 0 or 1, and with compiz turned as on or off as I can get it via System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects. Also no change when I disable the restricted ATI fglrx driver in Restricted Drivers Manager.

    Code:
    # /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
    #
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
    # values from the debconf database.
    #
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf(5) manual page.
    # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
    #
    # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
    # package.
    #
    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
    # again, run the following command:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Re: mythfrontend playback causes gdm restart, using fglrx - ATI Radeon X600

Not sure if I should be even worried about "XFree86-DRI" missing. Or should I be posting in another forum until the driver issue is resolved?

If only I knew a command to test out the basic driver functionality, like I used xawtv for in SuSE, but I dont seem to be using the v4l driver this time, so xawtv aint much help. How to test the basics?

Turn off Xgl. At least for now. Compositing support that is compatible with mythtv will be showing up in an upcoming fglrx release.

    Thank you, superm1.

Sorry to be a drag, but how do I properly disable XGL? I've turned it off in System > Preference > Appearance > Visual Effects with no luck.

    Well as of gutsy:

Remove it from apt is the easiest. You can also touch a file in ~/.config to do it too.

I think it was something like ~/.config/disable-xgl or something similar.

Re: mythfrontend playback causes gdm restart, using fglrx - ATI Radeon X600

Uninstalled xserver-xgl from synaptic, which certainly changed the error, thank you!

    Error is now:
    Code:
2007-10-22 09:43:48.466 VideoOutputXv Error: Could not find suitable XVideo surface.
2007-10-22 09:43:48.467 VideoOutputXv: Falling back to X shared memory video output.
                                  *** May be slow ***
    xvinfo says:
    Code:
    X-Video Extension version 2.2

I've half a mind to chuck this ATI card out and buy an nVidia. Any recommendations?

Re: mythfrontend playback causes gdm restart, using fglrx - ATI Radeon X600

At this point you don't have the Xv overlay enabled. You can enable it via aticonfig. I don't know the option off hand, but there is an option for a video overlay if you see

    Code:
    aticonfig --help
the end command will end up something like this

    Code:
    sudo aticonfig --ovt=xv

Re: mythfrontend playback causes gdm restart, using fglrx - ATI Radeon X600

    Thanks Mario!

This seems to have improved things. I still get the "VideoOutputXv: XvMCTex: Init failed" but it at least changes graphics mode fine now, showing the big time and the onscreen channel footer, but no actual TV picture.

MythTV's channel scanner found a bunch of channels, but they're all just black (except the time and footer). Is there a tool you can recommend to confirm my tuner's reception?

    Hi,

your X config looks good now, I suppose. Your current problem is related to your TV tuner (you probably knew that already ).

For DVB, I'd usually recommend kaffeine for testing. But that's a KDE app which will pull in a lot of dependencies- not sure if you like that. Come to think of think, they should all be removed again if you remove kaffeine.

Anyways, there's also the dvb-utils package which comes with a few command line utilities like tzap and scan (or was it ""dvbscan"?) Not exactly user friendly, but a good way to find out if your card is working.

Maybe xine works too, but I'm not sure how to set that up for DVB. I believe it needs a channel.conf file which can be created using dvb-utils
