I started using Linux Mint after Ubuntu was upgraded to 7.10 because it slowed my system down a lot. After I log in, with only System Monitor and Pidgin on, the system uses ~290 MB of RAM. Right now (typing this post in Firefox with Pidgin, System Monitor, and Beryl on) the system is using 290 MB of RAM.
My Laptop: 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB HD, Intel Integrated Graphics, Intel Pro Wireless 3945
Partitioning: 10 GB Debian Testing partition, 10 GB Ubuntu 8.10, 1.2 GB Swap partition, and then 55 GB for "/media/Documents"

What do you get from 'free -m' in a terminal?
There may be a fair bit of cache-ing going on.

    My output is:

total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 1002 587 415 0 16 273
    -/+ buffers/cache: 297 705
    Swap: 831 0 831

The first figure on line 2 (297) is the 'real' use - the rest is cached stuff.

(PS: This is on Arch with a couple of terminals, compiz fusion, Epiphany and Kazehakase running).

I use mostly Arch these days. The speed difference is irresistible to me.

I keep Ubuntu on a test machine for practice or for experimentation. It's easier to set up, usually.

Loved your blog on Kazehakase btw - and the tip about axel was a sensation!

** I love apt, but I now find it strange when in a Debian/*buntu box and I can't pacman -Syu! **

Haven't read the other posts (lazy, I know) but I have to say I don't have Ubuntu installed anymore. First I went for Zenwalk (as a liter "version" of Slackware) and then for Arch Linux. Now I use Arch and have Zenwalk as a "backup OS" just in case something goes wrong with arch, and I still like it...
Toshiba L40-18W - it just works
