Problems with Gutsy on HP laptops.
If you have an HP Laptop - especially an HP 6000 or 9000 series laptop, steer clear of Gutsy 7.10 release.
Too many hardware issues, lack of available apps to satisfy dependencies and less than half the available programs as found under Feisty 7.04 release. Not sure what happened here but I can't even obtain the necessary requirements to even compile from source. Hardware is not supported and despite the efforts of many in submitting to the hardware database for developers to support this platform, it appears everything went to the "bit bucket". About the ONLY thing they did right was provide the Broadcom wireless nic firmware via the restricted drivers option and that was it. Nothing else works. You can't even manually fix the problems because the tools to do so are not available. PLEASE PLEASE stick with Feisty or whatever distro you may have used before in efforts to send the message to the developers that they missed the boat BIG TIME on this release. As a 20 yr professional, I cant recall a release take such a large step backwards. I'm beginning to wonder if this release is for Dell only.

Re: Gutsy is for Dell & NOT HP
I too am extremely disappointed in Gutsy. As a user of the Hp dv9000t and author of several HP related threads/tutorials I am VERY disappointed in Gutsy's support. Yes it does provide support for the Broadcom chipset, however it lacks functionality that we could attain in Feisty fairly easily. I strongly feel that users should continue with Feisty until Gutsy has had time to mature and develop into a better OS than Feisty was. The few features that Gutsy has implemented in hopes of being useful are nothing to compensate the usability of your hardware you use compatibility of.
As an HP user and seeing how many other students us HP laptops, I feel that this topic should be of great concern to the community/developers. Well over half of the fellow students I have in my classes use HP laptops. If there are that many HP users in such a small area, think of the amount of Ubuntu HP users that are going to be disappointed with Ubuntu. Fedora works great with HP laptops and if users are disappointed with Ubuntu, they are just going to turn to OpenSUSE, Fedora, or another distrobution. I would hate to see users leave the community in search of a more capable linux distro. If you are an HP user, I strongly recommend using Feisty for the time being. There is plenty of support for Feisty and lots of information/tutorials on problems you may encounter, for example: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=512059 Please post your thoughts on this, as I feel it is a very important topic and should be corrected as soon as possible.

Re: Gutsy is for Dell & NOT HP
I use a HP dv2570 and also feel a bit disappointed with Gutsy. All the good vibrations I had during the installation process got vanished when I tried to configure my video settings with the new interface. The monitor is not even recognized and the graphic drivers doesn't work properly, not even the Nvidia restricted drivers. No matter what I do, I have constant resolution and refresh rate issues. So I'll consider going back to Feisty and hang on for a better HP support on Gutsy, hopefully sooner than later.... or keep trying to solve it by myself if I've got time.
Anyway, good luck to all HP users that try Gutsy. Always make a backup first ^^ |

Re: Gutsy is for Dell & NOT HP
I am running Feisty on an HP dv2416us. It works well BUT wireless only work on the third boot after swtiching power sources, and when the computer wakes up from sleeping (either battery or AC) the mouse is invisible and the wireless has turned off. How do you have your dv2108 configured scorp123? My wireless is a broadcom 4310 and I got it running unsing ndiswrapper - but it only works on the third boot when booting with a different PS from last time. Any thoughts?

Re: Gutsy is for Dell & NOT HP
Yikes! I was just about ready to click the upgrade button, and then I thought i'd better double check the forum for any issues others may be having. I have an older HP Pavilion zd7280 that works great on 7.04. Does anyone think I'd run into the same issues as the HP users with dv model laptops?
Glad I saw this post. jb |

Re: Gutsy is for Dell & NOT HP
Grr I wish I would have seen this before I upgraded. I am having fewer problems than you guys with a dv6000 but I have no sound. My nvidia drivers, compiz, multimedia buttons, and pretty much everything is working fine, but for some reason sound isn't. I had no problem when installing Feisty with anything except the broadcom chipset (which has now crapped out in my motherboard.) Well I will try to fix this, too late (i.e. lazy) to go back almost.

Re: Gutsy is for Dell & NOT HP
I have a HPdv8000 series laptop and it works perfect. All except suspend but ATI says thats their fault. Gutsy runs fast and beautifully. Startup is quick as well as shut down and I love it.
