Of course, if you are on a budget, get a Windows one (plenty of cheap choices) and install some Linux on that.
I like Linux better for the desktop - but I recently switched my parents over to OS X. I can't tell you how nice it is and how much less help/spyware (they were using Windows) is on it.
It's also nice to install most native programs - just dragging a folder or icon onto the harddrive. Uninstalling is the same story.
And with apple's X11 and Fink commander - unix programs can be installed as well - just not as nicely.
On the PC side - I like IBM and Medion (they are at Aldi) for solid hardware. I tend to avoid Compaq but it's been years since I got something from them........
Yup, on a budget for sure, though I would LOVE to get a Powerbook or iBook. I've used OSX on the computers at my old printing company and it is just beautiful, but I couldn't I can't bear to spend the kind of money they want for their systems. I'm one poor S.O.B.
Thanx for the advice on laptops. I would have it strictly for Ubuntu/Linux. What should I look for so that I can get a decently powered machine, but kinda geared for Ubuntu/Linux? Personally I've never been a big fan of IBM/Intel and would perfer something AMD'ish, but that's really not too fair, cause I've never had an IBM/Intel computer. edit: Oh, and of course, it would have to be nVidia for video, I just couldn't bear to go any other way.
Until I get more secure in working around Linux, the gamer in me will have to stick with Windows as a secondary system on my desktop but just to get my game fix and to accomplish my cd/dvd burning needs. But when I go mobile, I want it to be with Ubuntu/Linux and just be a closet Windower.
Common sense is assumptions ugly cousin.
