We're stuck with Lotus Notes at work. If you need a corporate-level e-mail client maybe it's the cat's pajamas. I wouldn't know.
    I just want to read/manage my e-mail!

I think everyone hates Lotus Notes(including me)...why can't businesses use Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird?

For the time being, this, IMHO, will be known as "Vapourware"

Cus Thunderbird has not support for microsoft exchange - witch is a dealbreaker for most businesses as I understand it(Evolution and the one for kde has support for it by the way).

So IBM will make my favorite program even better, I cant wait to see the changes But is "35 developers" much in this regard? And what code from Lotus will they share?

If a complete business are using exchange, you cant show up using Thunderbird since it don't support it. And if you read the comments/reviews from those how use exchange, you will know that it is very good. So the firm will not likely change to something else.
Just my impression, have never used it myself.
