Are you in the folder where you have the tar file when you prompt the command "sudo tar jxvf essential-20050412.tar.bz2 /usr/lib/win32"?

I was and I don't know why it didn't work. But I copied the tar file to /urs/lib/win32 and uncompressed from there. Seems to be fine now??

Yes, it's the same. Sorry if I didn't suggested this way, but I'm tired (I've been studying all day and helping users during the breaks).

No problem. Strangely, neither totem or xine will play wma files, but mplayer now can?? I prefer mplayer anyway. All I now need is a copy of the codec to allow it to play DVDs in ubuntu64.

seems I have a problem with xine to begin with. when I run it, it crashes and bring me back to login. I tried to play with the multimedia sys selector in the system > preferences tab but no luck. Any clues?

Ubuntu comes with a script to install it. There's no need for a .deb
    goto : /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/examples
run the install-css.sh script that's in there.

    bye

I know it might sound a little naive, but have you tried to reinstall it in Synaptic or apt-get?

I only extracted the codecs in /usr/lib/win32, but nothing further.

I ended up finding a driver for my video card and now it works fine. I haven't even completed the install howto and can play avi mpeg dvd!!!. Is it using the codecs extracted in the file?

Also totem is slow but xine is great. Is it safe to uninstall totem or does xine rely on it?

    >> nevermind.. i see its the other way around

Yes it is. I'm happy it works for you too.
