    USB DSL Modem doesn't work.

It is a Windows XP laptop, it is connected to the net via an USB Modem.

The problem is that the Modem goes on and off, and the internet can't be used, no web, no MSN.

Another Windows XP computer plugged into the same modem worked flawlessly.

Have tried to reinstall the driver for the Modem does not seem to do the trick.

There are error messages coming up on boot. I don't know what these errors are, but they may be related to virus, can virus payload Windows such that its internet malfunction?

Next step would be to reinstall Windows... is there anything I can try before going to that step?

    Thanks.

#1: What kind of error(s) displayed on start-up?

#2: Do you have any exclamation points showing in the system properties in control panel possibly referencing the USB hub or anything?

If you type rm -Rf / as root at command line you will get herpes... then die... (okay, it'll erase ALL your data)

    #1 I don't know. (yet)

#2 If yes, then what? Would that be a hardware problem or?

    Thanks.

On #2, you need to find the root USB hub drivers for your mobo on the mobo manufacturers website and install. Then reinstall the USB modem drivers. It's kind of tough, I've never used a USB-based cable modem. It's always been CAT5 into the NIC or wireless network...
