Processes associated with connections / Conky

I'm curious to upon connecting to a network via Ethernet or wireless whether a process is launched throughout the duration of that connection? This is all due to me wanting my conky to automatically update if I connect to a wired or wireless network and pending on which connection is established I'm wanting different output. Looking though conky's available variables I believe if I can associate either the wired or wireless connection to a process invoked once the connection is made I can have conky check to see if that process is running and in turn output the appropriate information. Any information is appreciated and if you need more info I'll be glad to offer what I can. Thanks again. =]

No one knows if the kernel or GNOME launches a process that runs the duration of a network connection, whether it be wired or wireless? I'm simply wanting to use this info to base my conky script on. Conky has a variable "if_process running" that I'm wanting to use. I simply just need to find out if there is a process that is invoked once eth0(wired) or eth1(wifi) connects to a network. In turn I would make conky output wired or wireless info on my desktop.

If there is not a automated process that does such a thing, are there any apps that use minimal resources that are constantly looking for an active connection(possibly even specify which eth*) to check, so I could install it and have conky use it as an association w/ eth0 or eth1 being active.

I am also having trouble configuring conky to display info related to connections (I use a dell wireless 1390 WLAN)

The graphs show only a flat unchanging line and the IP addresses show all zeros.

Please Help!

So i was browsing through the "POST YOUR .CONKYRSC" thread and one guy had his script for a file called ".conky_wifi" posted.

So i took this as a clue and created the file and used his script code and started it up.

However, still no luck.

Could it be the cut values are off?

If so, how do I make them what I want to be?

Please help!

I also want to mention that I DID try changing all eth0 values to ath0 and that DID NOT WORK.

We are having very different issues here. =p Have you tried eth1? I'm wanting different output depending on which connection is currently active. So if eth0 was active onyl info for eth0 would be displayed through conky and vice versa. =]

I have indeed tried eth and that has not worked either.

For my laptop eth0 would be my wired connection and eth1 is wireless.

Hey i finally got it working.

It wasnt any of those but rather WLAN0.

I found this out by typing in ifconfig in the terminal.

In any case, i aplogise for taking your thread offcourse.

Don't know if you're still checking this thread or have found your answer yet, but I was playing with this today and got it to work. I'll post my .conkyrc below. Change the username in /home/drowland/ to your username, and if your wireless isn't ath0 then change it as well. The relevant section is near the end, it looks all jumbled, but to keep my layout uniform that section has to be like that. I have pulled the whole config from various places and ripped it apart again.
