[SOLVED] Vista won't let me shrink partition to desired size

I am trying to get my new HP ready for Linux. I have disabled page filing, and turned off system restore, and the vista partitioner still won't let me shrink a 450GB!!!! partition to less than 250GB. I have a total of 500GB. That leaves plenty of room to install other OP's, but it is the principle of the thing now. Did I give up some kind of disk management rights when I agreed to Microsofts EULA? How in the !@#$ do I force Vista to shrink to MY SIZE?
