    The Unix Hierarchy

So after being involved with Linux for a month or two now, I have a question.

What is the hierarchy that these operating systems are based on?

    Example

There's 1) Unix, which was developed to 2) Linux, which 3) Debian came from, which 4) Ubuntu is based on.

Am I right? And if so, what are the options in each hierarchy and what are the differences between them?

    Re: The Unix Hierarchy

Linux wasn't exactly "developed from" UNIX; it was heavily inspired by it, and is just a kernel.

The standard is called FHS (Filesystem Hierarchy Standard).

    well...not exactly

you'll get much more useful info by searching for "history of Linux" or so, then by asking here....

    Re: The Unix Hierarchy

There are a few diagrams about the history of linux on the internet. This is one of the better ones I've found.
