I give up

Ubuntu, it looks bad and it firstly won't install. After messing around for hours i get the thing to install through a crappy text based installer. Once i get it working Ubuntu wants me to update my system - after updating i get a big red error output saying that the updates have failed - something to do with openoffice now my repo's don't work.

THIS OS IS BUILT ON A KNIFE edge, its not ready for the user is updates built by the OS devs do not work when prompted. Its not good - a very very poor way to introduce newbie into linux - luckly i got sabayon which works.

I hope you guys sort out the distro because the updates you supply are built to destroy your own distro. Good work.

Back to windows and sabayon. - Vista is 100 times easier, feature rich than ubuntu and its updates don't break it to a state which the distro is unusable. I want to say alot more about the great work that has gone into the distro but i won't.

Re: I give up

I tried regular and alternate install. Never had a 'crappy text based installer'.

Seems to be installing for a lot of people.

That's funny. Last time I installed XP it was also a crappy text-based installer. And I'm still looking for that mystical live Windows CD that installs the entire system for you. Maybe someone can help me find it.

I'll skip the rest of your post. You're angry, you're trolling, and that's more than enough.

Excuse me, but Darksong is not a troll, is an unsatisfied user. Ubuntu didn't work for this user and I think this user can complaint about it.

Ubuntu, it looks bad
Excuse me?! *MY* Ubuntu installations most definitely do NOT look bad. They're downright beautiful--so much so that windoze users regularly ask WHAT I'm running. (Sidenote: Just this afternoon I wowed two relatives when I showed them the amazing cube and other features of Compiz-Fusion. They were speechless. I have no idea if M$ has already stolen the same or similar idea, but even if they have it'll be a cheap imitation--as all their "features" are.)

Excuse me again?! It installs for me very easily--time after time, on different brands of computers with different processors, different specs, different monitors, different printers, etc. Not only that but my FORMERLY windoze users friends and relatives had no problem installing Ubuntu on their own. I've barely had to help anyone!

Strange, but I've never seen that. It must be reserved for folks who don't know what they're doing and somehow screw things up so badly that they render the installation GUI unusable and need a command line to fix it.

Yeah, whatever. See my previous comment.

Have fun running bloated, crashprone, EXPENSIVE software that continually requires you to upgrade both your software AND hardware. Bill Gate$ loves people like you.

You're kidding, right? Vista is crap, which is why a lot of people have been jumping ship and switching to Linux. And...I'm sorry...but I can't stop laughing at this: You think vista is more feature rich than Ubuntu? That statement alone PROVES that you're completely uninformed about the capabilities any Linux distro, including Ubuntu, has built in--features Micro$loth slowly tries to copy but, as is their habit, does it poorly. But if you'd rather use that crap than learn how to use a real and powerful OS, so be it.

Re: I give up

After reading a few dozen of your posts, I notice that you had negative comments about other distros you've tried and linux in general. Let's be realistic, linux is not for everyone and there are people who are not easily satisfied. If you've found that Vista and Sabayon fits the bill for you, that's great. Use them and enjoy. I hope that you don't have to compile much with Kuroo & Emerge or your enthusiasm may diminish a bit. If it does, I hope you'll be mature enough to skip the 'parting shots' post with them; it certainly doesn't change anyone's mind and simply makes you look a bit worse in their eyes.

Again, good luck and best wishes for finally finding the distros or OS's that fit your needs.

I think this is totally the point.

But Darksong, you also have to take in account the amount of people which go out of their way to help you with an issue that you are running into. This is one of the best communities I have seen, and everyone is willing to help with either advice on how to correct your situation or to help find a solution for you.

The solution is out there, with thousands of topics from simple Distro install to more complex full server install.

If none of the answers that you have skimmed through seem to be right for you, go ahead and post a new thread with your specific question. There are many people that just focus on the new threads posted and you will more than likely get a reply with in minutes. (look at the amount of reads on this topic and you will see what I mean)

That is why so many people use this "Distro", it can range from both a simple install to an extremely powerful work horse, and the expertise (with the ability to turn on and off the jargon of the system) to help solve most of all your problems are all right here (which is astonding to me).

I have ran into many problems myself which have all been "user" based. Yeah, I get frusterated as all... well ya know the feeling, but I revert from the urge to scream and yell and turn to the place where I know the information to "fix-it" is.

I hope you don't give up and try again, Ubuntu is getting to the point of being time-well-tested and it is still moving along at a good pace.

Anyway, that is how I feel on your issue.

Good luck to you with whatever you try.

(ps I think this all has been stated more than once and better than I have said it, but I think it was needed to be said again here)

Re: I give up

Looks bad and firstly doesn't install? You could at least get your complaints in proper order.

It seemed pretty ready for the user for me... seeing as I've been using it for months now and had very little Linux experience beforehand.
