Ubuntu a long way to go!

Are you guys serious with this Ubuntu linux or linux in general? First of all you gotta be a complete geek to use it but dont get me wrong I've tried it and had some fun getting it to work and also had headaches with it. I still find that all the linux distros ive tried are quite techy for me. I never seen an os as simple as M$ windblows but ubuntu reminds me when windblows was in its 3.1 stage where you had to spend hours to get a few little things working.

I think you gotta simplify such a complicated os,

I have to disagree. I have only a basic knowledge of computers and I've completely converted both my desktop and laptop to Ubuntu. The only real hiccup I had was with the wireless on my laptop and in five minutes, just by searching this site, I had it solved. Hope you'll be patient, reconsider, and don't neglect the community aspect--it's incredible.

Or it's just you adjusting to change perhaps? After being on Ubuntu for 2 years now, and on Linux for 4, I find myself saying the same thing about Windows sometimes. Also, which version are you using, and what problems are you finding?

Oh and as to serious, hell I am...I've got every pc and laptop in this house converted to Ubuntu, and both me, my 2 sisters and my Dad use it every day with v. little problems.

you only find windows easy because you are familiar with it. i'm sure when you first learned to drive (or when if you're not old enough) you found that a bit difficult to get used to. its just something different.

i bet learning your way around windows was just as difficult as it was for ubuntu. you've just forgot how long it took you to learn.

Well, I suppose it's six of one and half a dozen of the other...

I spent half a day last Wednesday setting up a Windows XP Pro image for a brand new model of Dell PC we've got in at work. Without boring you too much, I had serious problems getting the sound card and USB up and running properly due to driver problems. Then, after imaging, the sysprep tool decided to loose lots of font files when going through the mini-setup causing me having to make a new image... Nightmare !

My missus (and you couldn't find yourself a less geeky person) loves Ubuntu. She likes it 'cause it just works. Imagine that!

At the end of the day - computers are generally quite complicated things, sometimes you'll be lucky, sometimes not! I've had issues with Ubuntu, I've had issues with Windows.

Yep..my sister's pc, a NEC, dunno quite the name has an integrated soundcard that works out of the box in Linux, and for all my geekery, I couldn't make it work in XP

nonsense. i don't know a damn thing, i'm too lazy to read all the tl/dr/dmsa documentation and i find ubuntu drunken child easy to use.

And I thought that not reading manuals was a very male thing!

Anyway, I certainly disagree with the OP. The last (and absolutely final) time I did a fresh install of Windows XP/MSOffice it took three and half hours and I was still having screen res problems. Last night I installed Zenwalk in less than half an hour and had everything working just fine.

The biggest hurdle is "Windows Thinking", not Linux itself.

My wife and one of my sons both switched to Ubuntu with very few complaints - which is highly unusual, I can assure you. (although OO comes in for a bit of a pasting occasionally and I'm inclined to agree)

uhm, mac osx? anyways, that's neither here nor there..

if you find linux in general to be difficult, you might as well stick with what you know (and like?) which is windows.
