    I got the same error to on my amd64 hoary system. I can get et to load (haven't tried playing it yet) by making the following change.
    Code:
    sudo nano /usr/local/games/enemy-territory/et
    and adding the following line
    Code:
    export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.2
    right before the line that says
    Code:
    exec ./et.x86 "$@"

    Try updating punkbuster
    Code:
    cd /usr/local/games/enemy-territory/pb/
    sudo chmod +x pbweb.x86
    sudo ./pbweb.x86
    delete the ~/.etwolf directory
    Code:
    cd ~
    rm -r .etwolf/
    and then load et again.

    I just reread your post, are you running this as root ? you should not need to run as root.

    My 14 month old daughter just caused me to have a black screen lockup too. She pressed the reset button on my router causing the Internet to become unavailable when I started up et. As a result et hung until I pressed Control+C. Make sure your Internet connection is running before starting et and let us know how it goes.

    That's the source of your final problem, it's conflicting with something sound related.

    I have an idea, but I haven't had a chance to try it here (It is 2:20am here and I need sleep).

    First we will need to install some more software

    sudo apt-get install esound-clients
    then we need to edit our et launch script
    Code:
    sudo nano /usr/local/games/enemy-territory/et
    and add the following line

    esddsp --mmap et.x86
    on the line just before
    Code:
    exec ./et.x86 "$@"
    Let us know how it goes
