yes... I had problems too. Try in another time of day.

Without .pk3 (maps) files, game is only 40 MB. I could send it to you if you think you can use it to overwrite yours or something.

I've gone through all of the sound "fixes" from the tutorial and still don't have sound.

The message I get every time I start it up is:

    Code:
    ------- sound initialization -------
/dev/dsp: No such file or directory
    Could not open /dev/dsp
    ------------------------------------
    Anyone know what this is?

open your terminal and type: sudo gedit /etc/init.d/et-sound
then a blank page will apear, you need to copy paste this into the blank page:

    #!/bin/sh
    #Bug in Wolfenstein ET
    echo "et.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
    echo "et.x86 0 0 disable" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss
and then use the codes below, one at a time:

    sudo chmod 755 /etc/init.d/et-sound
    sudo update-rc.d et-sound defaults
    sudo /etc/init.d/et-sound start
    enjoy.

testet to work on Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10, 9.04 and the new 9.10.

Re: HOW TO: install Enemy Territory

I've recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala on Acer Aspire 3680 laptop with an Intel GPU on board. Most of the games work fine but I can't start Enemy Territory on this system. When I start the game it loads everything, the screen resoulution changes but soon after that game shuts down. Here is an output from a console:

Exclamation Re: HOW TO: install Enemy Territory

Just stumbled into an old Enemy Territory installation and noticed that I had noticeably less PunkBuster-releated problems on that particular machine. So I compared it to a fresh install to get as much out of it as possible:

(Grab your files off the idSoftware ftp server.)

    0. Make your installer executable with
    Code:
    chmod +x <filename>
, install game into default directory (/usr/local/games/enemy-territory/ by default). (To start the installer use
    Code:
    sh ./<filename>
    ).

    1. Update to 2.60b - (multiOS version of the patch).

    2. Install etpro by extracting the archive to ~/.etwolf/etpro .

    3. Place (previous) configs in .etwolf/etmain & .etwolf/etpro, autoexec and related scripts tp the first and player profile with the related etconfig.cfg to ~/.etwolf/etpro/profiles/<profilename>/. Still recommend having your settings as an autoexec.cfg for ET tends to reset rendering options after an unexpected closing of the game.)

    4. Install esound:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install esound
    and setup oss:
Check your loaded modules by running:
    Code:
    lsmod | grep snd
check for and if neccessary modprobe to tryout the following modules:
snd_seq_oss, snd_mixer_oss, snd_pcm_oss. To make them loaded by default add them to your /etc/modules, one on each line followed by linechange. (Remember to close all non-oss audio applications before running et. If you need to use non-oss audio applications theres the sdl.)

    5. Copy the contents of /usr/local/games/enemy-territory/pb/ to ~/.etwolf/pb. Download to both forementioned directories the PunkBuster GUI updaterpbupdate.run. Make both also executable (chmod +x), add Enemy Territory "twice", the tool suggests both locations right. Update both by checking for updates. (The punkbuster installation in .etwolf is primary but both seems to work best.

6 Remember to set the permissions for directories according to the following(, which reduced tremendously PunkBuster-releated trouble, such as "violation game-integrity", "GUID AUTH: UNKN" etc):

~/.etwolf : should be set correctly (user:user) by default, but check it by running ls -al. also permissions 751 (chmod -R).

    /usr/share/games/enemy-territory:

    Code:
    chmod -R user:root /usr/local/games/enemy-territory
    set permissions accordingly, here's mine:

    Code:
    drwxr-xr-x 6 user root 4096 2009-05-19 21:56 .

    7. Remember: To start the game with etpro;
    Code:
    et +set fs_game etpro
Probably my favourite game, now running pretty nicely on Kubuntu Karmic i686. My cfg to set an example, hardware dependent gfx commented out by default. Remember to configure your mouse, chances are you'll need a good one to keep up

@pribina: Your ET Client is executing a default configuration script for the program to detect settings and as a part of it changing rendering and graphics options(, which seems to fail with a status 11). In short the script could be so outdated or you might have some problems with your graphics drivers. So check those and more importantly configure the game by making a textfile called "autoexec.cfg" in your ~/.wolfet/etmain and setting average graphics properties.
