Freespire for me, kubuntu just doesn't have the software or strength ubuntu, Gnome is to bland for me
You surely mean a default gnome is too bland......for you of course
Some of the "gnome" desktops i`ve seen have been anything but bland...

It dont really matter what it looks like to start out with though does it?

It's like anything in life-what is best in one area can be not so good in another, and "best" is a pretty unspecific adjective-plus very subjective. e.g Zenwalk is much faster at booting than ubuntu so if you're interested primarily in that then that distro is "best".
I used to like slackware a lot maybe because I believed it was simpiler to figure out, but at the end of the day, for me, it comes down to overall usability and in that category ubuntu, with all its warts, really shines.

Ubuntu 7.04 is pretty nice, as is openSUSE 10.2.

I tried Redhat ( 6.0 ), Mandrake ( 8.0 ) and Knoppix before trying Ubuntu. I really like Ubuntu but im seriously considering going with a minimal Debian install and then adding gnome and whatever I need ( although I am too lazy to do "back ups" and get everything back to working status. )

Ubuntu is definitely much more convenient and easy to pick up than any of the previous distros I tried, now that im a bit more comfortable in Linux, synaptic is just one of the most convenient pieces of software I ever used and it turned Linux from a headache to find where all the settings and binaries are ( sadly im too used to windows, so much that I know most settings on all versions by memory cause of my job, anything else takes me some time to adjust ) to a breeze that integrates my system 10x better than anything else ive tried. I realize this features are not exclusive to gnome but the introduction, presentation and installation of the distro was just way more friendly and extremely useful.

I'm working in Puppy linux right now, because I couldn't get the wireless to work in Ubuntu. It took less than two minutes to set up in Puppy. It might not be the prettiest distro to look at, but for speed and ease of use, I gotta vote Puppy.

ubuntu is good, but kde has the better looks, so ill be switching over to kubuntu eventually. (right now I'm using standard install + kubuntu-desktop, so its a mix of the apps)

I have my own Ubuntu theme-distro called Norrix. It's essentially the same as regular Ubuntu, but it has Chuck Norris on everything.

    Too many of them.
Three years ago, it would have to be Mepis, then Vector Linux, Ubuntu, Zenwalk,,

Currently, my favorite distro for ease of use and all is Linux Mint which is based off Ubuntu. It is simply a joy to work with.
My favorite distros: Mint / Manjaro / Archbang
