    Re: HOWTO: Lexmark Printers

    Hey guys!
I have the same problem! Was there a solution to this? I already did the tutorial for like 4 times, but it doesn't work for me.
    printer: lexmark z 605, ubuntu 7.04

basically, the slash between usb and lp0 is missing. how can I change it? or is it something else?

    Re: HOWTO: Lexmark Printers

I have a Lexmark X1185 printer....I'm VERY new to linux. I followed the HowTo step by step on the first page of this thread and everything worked fine. I've set up the printer in the Printer Config using Z600. When I try to print a test page, the printer arm slams the cartridge against the side of the printer and the light just starts blinking on the printer. Any insight from anyone?

    Thanks in advance.

My comments below seem a bit pedantic but I just thought, keeping it simple enough for everyone, in-keeping with the style of this site, maybe add some points to the howto?

I had to sudo apt-get install alien first.

When I run alien I get a warning about ownership of files, because you didn't tell me to run it as root, so I went back and did "sudo alien"

That said, it's probably still the howto where the output I got differed least from what I was expecting, if you see what I mean. Which might be partly because I'm using breezy.
I have a Lexmark 1195 and this worked fine. Just had to get alien:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install alien
and execute the restart CUPS daemon in super user mode:
    Code:
    sudo /etc/rc2.d/S19cupsys restart

It is recognized as a generic X1100 series but it does not print. It remains idle.
This reply is probably a bit too late for you, but i've just got an X1180 working with Gutsy Gibbon... further info, I followed the original 'How To' but didn't get any output at the end, however by going to System>Administration>printing>new printer I was able to work through the wizards until I found the Z600 option and selected that.

    Re: HOWTO: Lexmark Printers

aj, I believe a "cd lexmark" is needed in between the top two lines. mv the file to folder "lexmark," then cd, then tar.

    Re: HOWTO: Lexmark Printers

For whatever it's worth, I got an X1150 shared across the network working under Gutsy after much wailing and gnashing of teeth. The how-to executed perfectly (minus the USB part because of the network connection) except for the fact that nothing happened when submitting print jobs. A tip somewhere along the way to install libstdc version 5 got me going:

yeah...i got that too with breazy. you can go to

System ->Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager

search for libstdc, and install version 5.
From the looks of it, Gutsy installs version 6 but 5 is necessary here. ??? Anyway, thanks much for the leg up to all and sundry.

    Re: HOWTO: Lexmark Printers

Howdy all, I've been trying to use these instructions for my Lexmark 510 series, but I have trouble when I get to this part:

If you get no output, mount the usb filesystem.

Add this to your /etc/fstab file:

    Code:
    usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=14,devmode=0660 0 0
Then just type: sudo mount usbfs. That should fix it.
I can get to the fstab file, open it, and enter the new code, but it won't let me save it. Do I need to log in as root to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Edit: Logged in as root, edited the file, IT WORKS! One less reason to use XP! Now to get my webcam working...
