Plain text editors make faster web pages and don't butcher code.
If you can't had code you shouldn't be making pages and need to visit www.w3schools.com
Text editors are good, but specialized editors are even better. Unfortunately, all the good ones I know are on the Mac (BBEdit/Text Wrangler, Coda, Text Mate, Smultron, etc.).

Unfortunately, there is no Linux css/html editor with multi-file search, live ftp editing and syntax checking and optimization.
    ubuntu others
    as you would have them

I use HTMLkit in wine but has some lost features, then I complete with Screem, if you do not like write the code then a simple editor like OO.org writer or google page builder will do the trick.
For your own record my native language is Spanish

Which editor do you use in win?
Many runs really good in wine. For example dreamweaver 8

Kompozer is probably your best choice: http://www.getdeb.net/search.php?keywords=kompozer

I just use Vim for everything, as I figure that hand coding everything is the best way to truly grasp everything. Plus setting up random IDE's is too much work sometimes. I'd rather have control over how everything is organized and such.

hmmm... im little into the same problem, i want an editor that is graphical. to program flash and also to program javascripts

in the manner of drag and drop, little like wysiwyg. but to be able to drag the objects to where i want them... is there anything remotely like that that i want for linux.

ive tried nvu and screem. not aptana, yet but ill try it.
but i cant configure how to edit the sites with drag n drop similarity :/
my homepage for now is not that advanced.

Tried Screem... but it hasn't been updated in sometime.
Tried Bluefish... but I don't like the interface.
Tried Aptana... but it consumes too much CPU.
Tried Kompozer... but I don't like WYSIWYG editors, plus it won't open CSS documents.
Tried Quanta... and it's the best of the bunch so far!!!

Quanta is the closest thing to Dreamweaver, which consumes less RAM, leaves out the WYSIWYG, and has a nice interface to look at.

After you study W3C, read up on some free e-Books to toughen up your skills, and then I recommend go looking at a website that you really like, and study it's code.

    Have Fun!!!
