How to install the Canon Pixma iP1500 printer the easy way

How TO Install Canon IP1500 Printer

This the easiest way to install the Canon iP1500 Printer on Ubuntu. This is the way I set mine up and it works perfectly.

The first step is to open up your source list and add this to it
    Code:
    deb http://mambo.kuhp.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~takushi/ubuntu ./
If you don't know how to open up your source list you can do it by putting this in the terminal

    Code:
    gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
you can use whatever text editor you like to edit your source list.

After adding that to your source list you need to do this in the terminal

    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
Next you need to install these files
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install libcnbj-2.5 bjfilter-2.5 pstocanonbj
Cupsys will be automatically restarted and you can select printer in cupsys configuration which is
http://localhost:631 or if you don't want to do that you can go to System>Admistration>Printer>Add Printer.

To add the printer through the cups, the first thing you do is click on add a printer. The next screen will ask you for the name of you printer, location and description the ony thing you really have to fill in is the name. After you done filling in the information click continue. The next page is asks you to select your printer which should be Canon iP1500 USB # (Canon iP1500). Hit continue and then it will ask you for your driver, select the Canon Pixma iP1500 Ver.2.50 (en) then click on add printer.

To add the printer the other way once you click on add printer a new window will open up that say's add a printer at the top and Step 1 of 3: Printer connection. As long as your printer is turned on it should show up in "Use a detected printer", if it doesn't you can select it in "Use another printer by speciying a port" and selecting Canon iP1500 USB # (Canon iP1500) then click forward. The next page is where you select the printer driver. The manufacturer is Canon if it already isn't selected and the Driver is Pixma iP1500 Ver.2.50, then click forward. Finally the next screen is the printer information you don't really have to worry about filling in the rest of the information if you don't want to just click "Apply" and now your iP1500 printer should show up under printers.

Right click on your printer and then click on Print a Test Page and your printer should crank out a test page, if it doesn't please let me know and we can try to figure out why.

I know this works on Ubuntu Edgy and Feisty so I anybody wants to try it on Dapper and let me know if it works that would be appreciated. If you run into any problems feel free to ask questions.

This is a great tutorial. I have this printer and went crazy trying to get it to work before finding these instructions somewhere else (forget where... although I think it might have been on this site). Anyway, with these simple steps, it works great.

Looks like you might have a typo, though in this line: gksudo gedit /etc/apt/soruces.list

Anyway, great job on making a quick and simple tutorial!

That's why I wrote the tutorial, I was having problems trying to get it setup too in Ubuntu. I was trying to write it so it was geared more towards somebody that have very little knowledge of Ubuntu so they wouldn't get frustrated trying to set it up. Thanks for catching the typo I will fix it.

Re: How to install the Canon Pixma iP1500 printer the easy way

this doesn't work on dapper. this is what i got:

    root@chichi-laptop:/stuff/chichi/home# apt-get install libcnbj-2.5 bjfilter-2.5 pstocanonbj
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
    bjfilter-2.5: Depends: libc6 (>= 2.4-1) but 2.3.6-0ubuntu20.4 is to be installed
pstocanonbj: Depends: libc6 (>= 2.4-1) but 2.3.6-0ubuntu20.4 is to be installed
Depends: libcupsys2 (>= 1.2.3) but 1.2.2-0ubuntu0.6.06 is to be installed
    E: Broken packages

So I guess no printer on dapper, and I'll have to move on to the next version...

At least I know now that it won't work on dapper now, thanks for letting me know anyway. If you have problems getting it to work on Edgy or have trouble upgrading to Edgy let me know.

Does this work too for a Canon Pixma IP1800 printer?

Re: How to install the Canon Pixma iP1500 printer the easy way

I honestly have no idea, I don't have that printer therefor I couldn't test to if it would work. You can try to see if it will work and let me know if it does or not.I know those drivers work on the iP1000 printer. If that doesn't work, let me know and I will see what I can find out finding some drivers to work.
