oh, and apparently someone did try it! =)
oh, and apparently someone did try it! =)
the only exception is that i am using a newer version of wine, but i don't think that matters
i am using a different monitor at this very moment, and the game started up (the full version) but it is not working. The halo logo screen dimmed itself to be black and white after a moment and the mouse is lagged. right after that, some tiny window came up for a split second and the game exited.
I tried the Halo PC Trial, (without installing it) and got an error that said the vsh.bin shader was corrupted or missing. (???) it was not either, so i am going to try to install the program instead of running it off a folder moved from anither pc.
It works and the mouse doesn't lag, true fullscreen
still 1.3GiB memory usage (hmm)
this is with WINE 0.9.54
Ok! The Halo Trial only works right after installation, and even then, it doesn't work right. I won't even botherto list the load of problems there are with my box. Oh well...I guess i will have to move on to bigger and better things.
I tried to install halo trial on wine. It didnt even start. I guess its because I only have 1GB of Ram?
Lordhebe, you are a Wine God (or God of Wine, whichever trips your trigger). I followed the steps you posted and this is the FIRST Windows game I have managed to get to work in Linux!
A few comments, but doesn't alter my joy:
a) I too suffer from mouse lag, but insufficient to affect the game.
b) Oddly, the sound works better than on my previous Windows machine.
c) The game refuses to shut down on its own, but sends the hard drive racing until I force quit - not a real problem since the game is the thing.
d) One of the files in the crackCD archive came with a little Trojan attached. I found it because I had to go to my Windows machine to unarchive the download and my antivirus picked it up.
Thanks again for your most illuminating "how-to". It was the most useful and easy to follow help I have found in this forum.

Question. I am currently using Wine 0.9.54 and was able to install Halo, but when I start the program, I hear the background music, but the screen loads and the top portion and where the four buttons (Campaign, Multiplayer, Settings and Quit) are, there are white boxes that cannot be accessed. Has anyone else experienced this or know how to work around it?

Well, my HALO has a few new twists that add to the excitement.
Since I am playing in the WINE desktop, any time I move the mouse too fast it jumps out the WINE desktop onto the LINUX desktop and I end up opening a few other LINUX applications (which really interrupts a battle with the Covenant).
The flashlight only lights up the back of my pistol, but I think that is a bug in the original game that was solved by a patch, but apparently the bug is still in the cracked .exe file.
The game still refuses to shut down. I guess it is making up for all the time I could not play it.
Anyway, now can I get Halo2 to work?
