That was my first guess but the problem is to find out to what it is applied.
    I tried:
    Code:
    echo -n "path/2/song" | md5sum
It didn't match the right cover.
Maybe it is based on the name of the albums or: artist - album...
    I will check it later.

The code Exaile uses is under /usr/lib/exaile/xl/covers.py. Apparently it registers it under ~/.exaile/music.db. I don't know how to open db files, but if I did I could probably help.

The md5sum and the filename are the same.
The file is md5sum'ed not the file name, I guess exaile stores a relation btween the cover and the album in a sort of database.
It can be interesting and useful to ask exaile devs on their forums :

Is there nothing that can grab the same covers as Exaile and sort them in folders? By symlinking the covers, perhaps?
If the problem is the space. I have 4208 songs but only 147 avatars (albums).
Exaile downloads covers for single tracks too and thats could probable be the cause of the high disk usage.
If you count only albums, I checked the size of a cover in jpg 800x600, about 100 KBytes.
    100x147=14.700 KBytes
    It isn't much.

    I installed exaile and /usr/lib/exaile/xl/covers.py doesn't exist
    locate covers.py returns nothing...

Yes, I think that it is based on the name of the album and the artist not the filename or path to prevent downloading twice the same cover.

    Code:
    $)─> locate covers.py
    /usr/lib/exaile/xl/covers.pyc
    /usr/lib/exaile/xl/covers.pyo
    /usr/lib/exaile/xl/covers.py
you should have update your locate db before
    Code:
    sudo updatedb
btw, it could also be under /usr/share/lib/exaile if you used /usr/share as prefix

You are right, it is on /usr/share/lib/exaile
I saw the md5 thing but I don't know to what it is applied.
    I don't understand much python...

I think the md5 sum is applied to the image file. Not very useful for you.
I guess it will be more interesting to look how exaile stores the relation between the cover and the album.
btw, the trick could be to have a killer feature in exaile to save the cover where we want

My problem isn't about space, I just don't want to duplicate so many images if I don't have to.

Anyway, I ended up deleting my music.db (it listed way more tracks than I really had and it was the only solution) and now my songs don't have any covers set to them any more. Since the album art collector was buggy for me, I'll try playing around with Sonata.

Ladies and gentlemen, our prayers have been answered!

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/exaile/+bug/135936

Scroll down to the bottom post, download exaile-cover-mover.py, and run it with "python exaile-cover-mover.py". And guess what? It works!

The only thing that didn't work was covers with non-Unicode characters. It also deletes them from ~/.exaile/covers afterwords, so I don't need to worry about duplicates.
