Flash 9 install script for AMD64 (nspluginwrapper)

This post has been replaced in the new 64bit section. Please post in the new post. This post will no longer be supported.

Nspluginwrapper Install Script for Dapper-Gutsy(Updated 3/8/08 )
This script will install the nspluginwrapper, and Flash for your 64bit browser for the amd64 version of Ubuntu Dapper, Edgy and Feisty, and Gutsy. It will not work on the i386 or 32bit version.
It will not install other plugins. There are other plugins, java being one, that nspluginwrapper can not work with. The script has been updated on 8/21/07. It no longer uses alien on Feisty, and it will clean out previous installs. I have also made a script that installs the old flash plugin that seems to work better than the new one.
Click here for the script that installs the previous r48 plugin (recommended Dapper-Gusty)
or
Click here if you want to download the script for r124 Flash plugin. (recommended Gutsy-Hardy)

If the script works for you please consider clicking this thank you icon.

Due to the problems with Flash and Gutsy the script has been modified to install flash and set it up for gutsy using the nspluginwrapper package in the Gutsy repo's.

The script also works with the 64bit builds of Swiftweasel, an optimized build of Firefox.

Instructions
1. Download the script.
2. Right click on the tar.gz and select "Extract Here"
3. Close all browsers.
4. Inside the folder that extracts is a "GetFlash" file, double click on it.
5. Select "Run in Terminal"
6. When the terminal closes, restart your browser.
7. Your done.

SD-Plissken has pointed out that users of the Fluxbox desktop may need to open a terminal and launch the script by navigating to it and using this command to launch the script.
Code:
sudo ./GetFlash
How to get help (Please Read Before Making a Post)
If you have any problems and need help Please read the included README file for instructions on what information to report in your post. Do not repeatedly install the script or try other methods until you have read the sections below and made a post.

Common Issues
Sound
First download and double click on this package to install it.
Gutsy - People using Gutsy that have sound problems should read this thread.

Sessions
Please make sure to start a new browser session if you run into any issues.

Other Flash Plugins.
If after installing the script you cant see flash. Make sure that all attempts at installing other flash plugins (Gnash, swfdec, etc) have been uninstalled and the files they created have been removed. The remains of past failed attempts are the #1 cause of flash not working. This is because the files conflict with the flash plugin.

Firefox 3 Beta's
This script sets up flash for the 2.0 series of firefox, Firefox 3 beta will also work, but you will need to link the plugins. This post gives info on the Beta 3. You may need to edit the commands if your Firefox beta folder is in another place. Forum member kurtpete offers some additional help in this post.

What to Include in your Post
When asking for help, please include the results of the following commands.
Code:
ls -al /usr/lib/mozilla//plugins/
ls -al /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/
uname -a
Unmet Dependencies ia32-libs
Users with any of the following errors during install are directed to this post.
The ******* in rthe following error is a wildcard that represents any package name.
Code:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
********: Depends: ******** but it is not going to be installed
or
Code:
nspluginwrapper depends on ia32-libs; however:
Package ia32-libs is not installed.
Remove Script
This link will download the removal script. Extract the file, then double click on the RemoveScript file and select run in terminal. This script is unnecessary if you are having issues getting the script to work. Its only use is to completely remove the applications from the script. This is counterproductive when people cant get the script to work because it removes clues as to what worked and what didnt.

Hardy Heron
This script is not setup to work with Hardy Heron. If
Code:
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
does not install flash. Make a post on the Hardy Heron section of the forum and (most important) file a bug report on launchpad. Part of running a Beta is reporting the bugs so they can be fixed.

Kilz, do you think this will stop those posts about how Flash won't work in 64 bit Ubuntu? Thank you sir...

Re: Flash 9 install script for AMD64 (nspluginwrapper)

Kilz,

Your script works perfectly with Firefox 64. For some reason Swiftfox 64 doesn't recognize Flash on my system and I still get the plugin error. Not a biggy in any way but as part of my learning process, where do I start to troubleshoot?

As an interesting aside, Firefox 64/ Swiftweasel download remarkably faster than Firefox over XP. With my primitive ADSL connection (Verizon) I never exceed @90 kbps with a 32 bit version of Firefox using XP. The same websites will download between @150 to 175kbps using Firefox 64/Swiftfox over Ubuntu. Any opinion regards the performance differential? Do others see this type of improvement?

Re: Flash 9 install script for AMD64 (nspluginwrapper)

Yes, I sure do. I have a cable modem connection and also see an improvement. I literally went from 150kbps to at least 270kbps on the HP.com website, over a consistent period of time.

Now, does this prove anything? Not necessarily. It is possible HP added some more bandwidth/server power at the same time I switched. However, I would not rule out the OS either. It is possible that it could be several things. Remember, Windows registry settings influence broadband capability/throughput. I would say that this could be one easily explained avenue...

I noticed this also, but no one believes me because "it is impossible" to download faster than a Windows OS. I assume it happens because Linux manages the TCP Stack much better and linux may set the internet settings automatically on a need-to-set basis that Windows needs a "internet optimizer" to set once (and those always made the problem worse for me on Windows).

I would get 600 KB/s max from any amount of servers on Windows, but I've seen upto 900 KB/s on Linux. I'm only paying for 600 KB/s though =P

Re: Flash 9 install script for AMD64 (nspluginwrapper)

Thanks so much for the script! I really appreciate your post and your script. I am one of those who was pulling out my hair because of problems with getting nsplugin, gnash, swf_player, and other browser installs to work. I hope you can get this put into the community documentation or something, because it's so helpful!

Another very happy customer.
I thought I wouldn't miss Flash, but I was wrong.

Thanks so much for doing the hard part to make it easy for me.
