Changing the notification area "dots" in gnome

I've noticed that some metacity themes (such as Reuben, I believe) feature an alternate icon for those little dots next to the notification area applet in the gnome panel. Can anybody tell me how to change it to something more pleasing to the eye than a bunch of white dots?

    Thanks!

Pretty much, yeah. They always appear next to the notification area panel applet.
