    New projects for Education team

    We have started the new Education team whose goals are to educating new users with Ubuntu and other open-source software. This is a team where everyone can contribute. The first project will be Virtual Machines.

    Please post any ideas on what you would like to see, and we will discuss, as a team, on what new projects we will start under the Education team.

    Proposal
    A workshop where people are taught the basics of Ubuntu in a hands-on classroom environment.

    Goal
    After completing this workshop you should have a basic understanding of the Ubuntu Linux operating system.

    Basics
    * Logging into Gnome...
    * Gnome Overview (menu navigation/panel overview)
    * WWW Overview (Firefox basics)
    * Email Overview (Evolution basics)
    * IM Overview (Gaim/Pidgin basics)
    * IRC Overview (Gnome's X-Chat basics)
    * Open Office Overview (Word basics, etc.)
    * Getting Support (Ubuntu Forums, IRC, etc.)
    * Logging out of Gnome...

    *At the end of the workshop attendee's should be provided with information on how to get Ubuntu (CD's, web site, etc.) as well as information on specialized workshops such as Virtualization, etc.

    Keep up the great work!

    I think you should take out the xchat thing. Gaim/Pidgin has a irc client built in. It just seems more logical to use one app that can do the job of two.

    br, here is a list of what I would consider educational for new usersIn addition to what you have)

    1. Setting up email
    2. Music players (such as rhythmbox, exaile, amorak, banshee, etc
    3. How to enable extra repositories
    4. How to use synaptic
    5. How to install other forms of software (deb packages, tar balls etc)
    6. How to on istallation and an explanation of the need for a separate home partition
    7. Links to graphic card driver installation tutorials
    8. Installing firestarter gui to help easy the iptables configuration of firewall
    9. Networking (routers)

    From my experience on the forum anwsering questions, these are all things that pop up the most often with new users

    Perhaps we could show ppl how to install and use Automatix2, so that they can install all the codecs for video/audio -- as well as easily install other user friendly programs.
    Thats what I did for my kids 10 and 14, and they use it all the time.

    It is preferable for people not to use Automatix2. This can potentially lead to people having issues with their systems, especially if he/she decides to remove something.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Re: New projects for Education team

    While I am not totally against automatix, I would prefer that users learn how to do thesse installs on their own. It would help them learn the system quicker. With Feisty, I have yet to have to install any codecs other than flash as I remember. The other problem I have with automatix is that the one time I used it, way back when, it interferred with my next version upgrade resulting in a complete reinstall. My opinion though.

    I like the direction this team is going in. Nice work Brian!
