Linux Needs a GOOD photo management app

No, F-Spot is not that good. DigiKam is OK, but not great.

Does anyone else agree that great photo management software for linux does not exist? Something along the lines of google picasa would be excellent. (Yeah I know it can be run under wine, but I really would rather run a native program).

Things I would love to have in a linux photo management app.

• Quick image tagging. The paradigm of current apps is terrible in my opinion, as it is not scalable when there is a large variety of different tags. For example, I like to tag every person's name in a photo, where it was taken, and any other relevant keywords.
• Quick EXIF data viewing/editing.
• Indexing database for fast photo location with searches.
• Quick email feature with automatic resizing.
• Quick upload to web service.
• Timelines.
• Organize by directory hierarchy, keywords, or date.
• Spectrum analysis on photos.

Maybe I am wrong, is there an app out there that will do all this?

Did you try picasa? Its available on ubuntu... and it ran fine when I was looking at it for brief time.

The OP pointed out both of those things.

I hear about this all the time, but I don't see problem, at least concerning my needs.

F-Spot is perfect for me, because it does most of those things you said, and if I need more advanced editing options, its a SNAP to open the photo in GIMP.

There's nothing wrong with running Picasa in Wine (google recommends you do this), but if you meant a Free Software variant of Picasa, I fully agree.

I'm not sure Gwenview or Gqview have all your requirements but have you tried them?

I did read your post, you should look around a bit more... There is a debian version of Picasa. Its available for edgy and feisty I believe.

F-Spot in conjunction with Beagle or Tracker would suit your needs. Aside from EXIF viewing and the email feature. It's said file formats are being worked on, and email features wouldn't be to hard to implement.

picasa works fine in ubuntu, I use it all the time. but for my (modest) needs, gthumb is just enough
