Try holding down the "C" key very quickly after powering on and leave it held until you hear or see it booting from the drive. Seems that some systems are sensitive to the C-key being held down prior to switching on power.

Be sure to burn the image as an iso, not just copy it over, use a CD-R and not a CD-RW, and burn at a speed slow enough for your cdrom to handle.

Yes, that worked. I had actually opened another post on this question because this went unanswered for some time. Thanks for the tip.

Re: Where to download Ubuntu for PowerPC and other frequently asked questions

    Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade Xubuntu from Dapper to Feisty on an iMac G3. I can navigate to /etc/apt/sources.lst in the file browser to see what's there; but if I try to edit with

    sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.lst or

    sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.lst

I get a blank page in the editor. How do I edit my repos so I can upgrade?

    Don't forget mini-iso!

In addition to the usual download sources:
    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCDownloads

There is another convenient way to install by using a mini-iso to install over the net:

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...tion/MinimalCD

Unlike downloading a whole distro that is likely to want to be ugraded over the net soon after install, these small iso's will pull down the latest updates right during installation and can save you a lot of time or costly bandwidth.

I guess they are similar to Debian's "netinst" method.

Ubuntu doesn't provide DVD's for any architecture, afaik, although you can get it from third-parties such as magazines and books - but only for the main architectures such as X86. Your best bet is either Debian, Fedora, or OpenSuse if you want a DVD for PPC. (Debian provides cd, dvd, and netinst for ppc)

In many cases older PPC's can't boot DVD's, and it would be a waste of bandwidth to download a DVD only to find that you have troubles booting it. That is one reason I don't favor any PPC distro that forces the use of DVD.

I'd recommend reviewing this faq on iso burning:

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

In most cases this means burning it as an iso image to CD-R, and at a low(ish) speed such as 4x, and holding down the "C" key while powering up, or holding down the "C" key very quickly after powering on. In your case you could try burning the cd-image to DVD, but I'd do so at a low speed.

Don't get me wrong - just because there is no DVD for Ubuntu doesn't mean that you can't try the CD's (live, alternate, server), or the minimal-iso netinst version - not to mention bittorrents.
