Unhappy Re: Where to download Ubuntu for PowerPC and other frequently asked questions

I tried to install Ubuntu on my E mac G4 and it wouldn't work. Just kept freezing after installation with alternative CD. Desktop CD didn't run, brought me to a screen which said insert help for help of something like that and wouldn't boot. What am i doing wrong?

Re: Where to download Ubuntu for PowerPC and other frequently asked questions

After working on it for about a day a scrounging around a bit I finally got Xubuntu 7.10 working on a secondhand PowerMac G4 I received. The key was using the alternate install CD and on the after install boot it took me to a screen with an initramfs CLI. Using https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCKnownIssues I found that you need to type in
    Code:
    modprobe ide-core
    exit
in order to finish booting and add
    Code:
    ide-core
    to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
    then run the command
    Code:
    sudo update-initramfs -u
after that it was all gravy.

This thread helped out a bunch since I found most of the links in here.

Re: Where to download Ubuntu for PowerPC and other frequently asked questions

I apologize in advance if this question is elsewhere.

What is the update on 8.04 PPC? Will there be a beta, will it be released at the same time as the 'other' versions (24 April)?

Curious minds want to know, and we want to try it out too!

    TIA

    For PowerPC, I assume:

If it's Ubuntu your after, you can download it here:

    http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/rele...te-powerpc.iso

But you might be better off with Xubuntu, as you say. It's not the release, but the daily current version. This might even be better than the release, who knows.

EDIT- This was released just before Xubuntu Hardy came out, but t essentially has the same features as the release.

PS- if you want x64 or x86, you are indeed posting in the wrong place.

    You can get that here:

    http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/re.../8.04/release/

(Try to be specific about what you want, e.g Xubuntu Hardy Heron for PPC.)

    Hope this helps!

none of them work on my emac g4 all I get is a black screen.

    Help: I'm stuck

I'm an Apple newbie and I tried to search for the answers, but I'm stuck. I have a Powerbook G3 Model M5343 333 mhz running OS9. I searched the model numbers and I 'think' it's the bronze model which makes it New World and should work. Am I correct so far? If so, I cannot get the Mac to boot from the CD (it contains Hardy). I tried booting while holding the 'c' key (letter c, right?). I tried again holding the apple, option, shift and delete together, and that did not work.

Is this G3 compatible with Ubuntu? I know some are not. If so, how do I get it to boot and install? Also, should I use Hardy or an earlier version?

BTW, I installed Hardy on a windows PC and it worked great!

Re: Where to download Ubuntu for PowerPC and other frequently asked questions

I guess I am a tad confused, I thought Hardy wasn't going to be supported on the PPC? So the torrent on the first thread, is that for a beta or something? I don't know if I should stick w/ 7.10. Does anyone know if Hardy Heron has support for the iBook G4's airport card out of the box?

    Thanks!
