I've updated the UNetbootin Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) builds to be in line with the new kernel that's being used by default, you can download the new builds at https://sourceforge.net/project/show...roup_id=198821

Anyhow, for now, try doing this:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
    sudo killall gdm
    sudo gdm
    see if it works then
    Hello tuxcantfly,
I entered the code you suggested and it worked almost. It now launches into xubnuntu successfully, however, the splash screen and desktop at stuck in a 320x200 pixel resolution and I can't change it via the gui and as stated earlier. I have no idea how to make these changes via command line. I am nearly certain this is a problem of my own making while I was messing with the xserver per other posts. I am guessing it has something to do with the driver settings or something. Again your help is greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,

You'll need to install the graphics drivers for your card.

If you're using an ATI card:

If you're using an Nvidia card:

This laptop has a build in intel 830MG controller. Can you point me to the thread for that driver set. Thank you for your patience with this noob.

    See here:

The "Install newer modesetting Intel video driver" section is probably what you need. If that doen't fix the issue, try https://help.ubuntu.com/community/i915Driver and if that doesn't work either just seach the forums for "915resolution", there are a variety of different guides here for different configurations.

To the author(s) of Win/GnuLinux binary,

I just wanted to thank you (all) for contributing to the GNU community. The uNetbootin utility proved really useful to me as I had to install a copy of Ubuntu on my Thinkpad X40, which doesn't have a CD/DVD-rom.

Many thanks for your efforts people. You made my life a heck of a lot easier with this last install.

    Peace.

Thanks. Anyhow, I've added support for Arch Linux in the latest build, download it at the usual spot at http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...roup_id=198821 I posted the archlinux-specific guide at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3401421 and http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=283021

I had the same issue with a freeze in the boot section while booting. I'm pretty sure I selected to use ubuntu desktop. I hit enter after selecting it in the install. However, it immediately advanced rather than filling the[*] like I thought it would so maybe I did it wrong. Anyway, rightnow I'm either installing or reinstalling ubuntu desktop.

btw, I'm doing the 7.04 install.

When choosing desktops, you have highlight and to use the <space> button to mark Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, and/or the other desktops, and you can only press <enter> AFTER it has been marked with the *. Simply highlighting and pressing <enter> will not select the package, and will only install a minimalist, command-line-only system. I've updated the first post accordingly since there seems to be plenty of confusion over this.

I've added support for installing Mandriva 2007 using UNetbootin, download at the usual spot at http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...roup_id=198821

A guide to installing Mandriva with UNetbootin is at http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?p=371030 and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3411772
