    Re: Howto: Install Ubuntu without a CD

    might be ME actually, certainly acts like it has ME anyway!

    there is a config.sys file, it says

    [menu]
    menucolor=15,0
    menuitem=windows,Windows
    menuitem=grub,Ubuntu
    menudefault=windows,30
    [grub]
    device=grub.exe
    [windows]

    [menu]
    menucolor=15,0
    menuitem=windows,Windows
    menuitem=grub,Ubuntu
    menudefault=windows,30
    [grub]
    device=grub.exe
    [windows]

    don't know why it repeats itself, but it does
    what should I edit it to?

    sorry for all the hassle,
    i do really want to try this OS, but i know none of the intricacies of system files and stuff like that so your guidance really is appreciated

    Question Re: Howto: Install Ubuntu without a CD

    I have an old Gateway solo 9300 laptop. It was choking on xp, so I thought I would switch to Ubuntu. I used this method and all went well until the installation phase hung at 6%. After waiting 1.5 hrs with no change, I shut down. Now I have nothing as the HDD was wiped - I'm not complaining as I was aware of the risk.

    However I would appreciate any help. The laptop has a dead cd drive, but workable floppy and usb ports and I have an eternal usb/firewire cd drive. The bios will not boot from a usb device and no bios update is available.

    So, I was thinking what I need to do is make a boot floppy of some sort that will enable the laptop to see the external usb cd drive and install Ubuntu from there.

    I looked at the guide to using smart boot manager https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SmartBootManagerHowto , but I could not work it out. I don't even know which OS I should be using because I don't have an OS anymore (or do I?).

    So in short, is there any flavor of floppy that will enable me to see the external usb cd drive and install Ubuntu?

    I'm not aware of any floppies that can boot from external usb cd drives (SBM can't), so what I'd do is install a minimal debian system using netboot floppies, then subsequently apt-get yourself an ubuntu installation...

    Guide on installing debian using netboot floppies:
    http://linux.simple.be/debian/floppy

    Detailed procedures on creating floppies from image files (since you can't boot your computer, you'll have to do the floppy creation process on another computer):
    http://www.debian.org/releases/stabl...h04s03.html.en

    Then, after you're done installing a minimal debian system, to turn it into an ubuntu system, this should do the job (enter these in the terminal of the minimal debian install):

    Code:
    su root
    echo \
    "
    deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty main restricted multiverse universe
    deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-security main restricted multiverse universe
    deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty-updates main restricted multiverse universe
    deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty-backports main restricted multiverse universe
    " > /etc/apt/sources.list
    apt-get update
    apt-get dist-upgrade
    apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
    Then reboot and you should have an ubuntu install, though note that I've never tested this procedure myself, so I can't guarantee that it'll work...

    Wow, thanks for the quick reply.
    The floppy drive is internal - the cd drive is external usb. I will get on to your suggestion right now. Many thanks.

    Unhappy Re: Howto: Install Ubuntu without a CD

    I tried to install over Debian.

    What happened was:
    (1) I must have missed something, because I ended up doing a full install of Debian;

    (2) On putting in the cmd apt-get update, it failed because of something to do with no public key;

    (3) I pressed on and entered apt-get dist-upgrade. This downloaded the about 490 mb and then started extracting and replacing

    (4) I entered apt-get install ubuntu-desktop and the installation started - but I got an error code (1)

    (5) I restared, but Debian gave me lots of warning messages about things not working. However I did get to the desktop, but Debian is not looking to healthy.

    I am loath to give up - so I am glad to try any more suggestions.

    UPDATE
    My hard drive failed during a re-install, so I have to give up on that laptop (it's now in the bin). However, I am now keen to install Ubuntu, so I will buy a 2nd hand laptop that DOES have a bootable cd drive.

    Anyway, thanks for the help.

    Seems like it doesn't manage to detect your internet connection, make sure it's connected (and if you're using wireless, try using ethernet, that might work), otherwise, you'll have to use either Wubi http://wubi-installer.org/ (if you have Windows installed) or Lubi http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=441918 (if you have Linux installed) since only those can do an offline install; they install to loopmounted partitions rather than a real partition, but you can transfer them to real partitions (making a real ubuntu install) using LVPM http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=438591
