Question Ubuntu CD/DVD-Label Archive

Hi all

While searching the ubuntu forums all over the world for a cd label I had an idea. What about creating a *buntu cd label archive? Well let me explain what I exactly mean. Imagine a page where you could search for labels/covers by using various criterias:
- What kind of buntu? (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu)
- What version? (..., 6.10, 7.04, ...)
- CD or DVD?
- Wich elements? (label, inlay, cover, etc.)
- Language?

Some ideas what the page could offer:
- User/Artist login
- Simple upload functionality for artists
- Comment system
- Rate the labels
- Discussion platform

What resources are required?
- Page-creation team
- Administrators
- Moderators
- Of course artists
- Domain (f.e. www.buntu-labels.org)
- Webspace including server side scripting (f.e. PHP, MySQL)
- Traffic

What could the goals of such a project be?
- Make the access to covers more easy
- Enhance ubuntu popularity
- Enhance the quality of the covers
- Do something for the ubuntu joiners

What do you all think about starting such a project? What do the artists think? Maybe something already exists? Thank you for reading and thinking about!

Regards

Philipp

That would be Great! Maybe make it a wiki so it could easily be updated and/or be added to.

Idea++;

This is a really good idea. I think that it would really help get more people interested in trying out Ubuntu. I know that someone is more likely to use or take a cd with a nice label over one with a sharpie label.

That is very true. Professional looking CDs are always good.

Like I said, a wiki would be good so ppl could update the images as the versions get replaced over time.

Re: Ubuntu CD/DVD-Label Archive

Here is the forum where I posted the original DVD cover artwork: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=38345. There is some good information there including links to derivative works and my artwork source files.

Also, take a look at the posts about the OSI logo usage. In short, don't use it. I spoke with them and they said that I would have to sign a document stating that ALL the software on the disc meets their open source definition. Since this is not the case, the logo cannot be used. You should also seek information regarding the GNU logo.

It makes me feel good to see my original design being used. Here is a French forum where folks made a few versions, including a Kubuntu version: http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=24442. I like what you've done with it. Have you put the source files up anywhere?

Re: Ubuntu CD/DVD-Label Archive

Thank you for the feedback!

It sounds like there is at least a small amount of interest in this project. Well, that's at least enough for me to start this.

OK. I am able to freely offer:
- Page programming
- Hosting (including a traffic amount of 400GB a month)
- Paying the domain costs

What do I need from YOU to start?
- A forum in the 3rd party forums here on ubuntuforums.org
- A nice interface
- Translators
- Testers
Any help (ideas, programming, graphics, etc.) is welcome!

What domain name do you suggest?
ubuntu-labels.org ?

Regards

Philipp

Well, PHP would probably be wanted/needed to set up a wiki... http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki is probably something to seriously consider.

For the domain name, ubuntu-labels.org(.com) would probably be just fine. however I don't know how Canonical would not/would like it, might consider contacting them before any actual hosting went under way - just to make sure. I would still buy the domains (if I were you) just in case anybody else had an idea.

I think after the wiki is set up, people like me would love to update parts of it - that's what open source is all about

Anyway another ubuntu-labels.org++ && ubuntu-labels.com++ from me
Cheers
