!! Load installer components from CD - Asus R2H

    Hi,

I am trying to install wubi/Ubuntu from the network on an Asus R2H with WinXP using the minefield2 installer.

It perfectly loads the files, prepared everything and starts GRUB and booting. After some installation steps it shows a red screen with these messages:

!! Load installer components from CD
    Installation step failed
An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item
again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The
failing step is: Load installer components from CD

    <Continue>

The previous step "Detect and mount CD-ROM" apparently works for the iso image on my HDD.

So, what could be the reason? What could I try or do differently?

    Nikolaus

Re: !! Load installer components from CD - Asus R2H

If you are sure ubuntu 7.04 is supposed to work on it, and if the actual installation started (semi gui screens) :
1-post the files you find in wubi/logs
2-save the iso file in wubi/install next to wubi.exe, so you won t have to download it again.
3-you have to fully uninstall wubi after each failed install attempt using using windows add/remove, running wubi again, or uninstall.exe in wubi folder.
4-If another try does not solve the issue, search or post in the general forum for this asus r2h known issues with ubuntu 7.04.

    Hope this is enough indication.
2-save the iso file in wubi/install next to wubi.exe, so you won t have to download it again.
    already done
3-you have to fully uninstall wubi after each failed install attempt using using windows add/remove, running wubi again, or uninstall.exe in wubi folder.
done several times in different order without any change
4-If another try does not solve the issue, search or post in the general forum for this asus r2h known issues with ubuntu 7.04.
Nothing found... Except an interestinh hint that some hackers even managed to install MacOS X on this device.

    Many thanks for any hint...

Many thanks. I know this page - and unfortunately it does neither help with Ubuntu nor wubi...

When you have the red page press Alt+F4 and see if there is any useful error. If you need to see older messages, press Alt+F2 and at the prompt execute:

    nano /var/log/syslog

I uninstalled wubi and did a fresh install.

After rebooting, I again got the red screen with installer components issues. This time I had shortly seen a message about some loop7 device that could not be mounted.

Pressing Alt-F4 at the red page made the installer step selection list reappear. I could not even select "Execute a shell" - gave a different red screen. Strange... When selecting a second time it worked (without having the keyboard layout set correctly).

    Alt-F2 gave a screen with a list of additional installer components. E.g. choose-mirror, eject-udeb, iso-scan, etc.

Looking into syslog by your proposed nano command shows:
    * several messages about resolver (libc6) and resolver (libnewt0.52): package doesn't exist
(this came before a message BEGIN LOOP INSTALL)
    * after doing something with ROOT=/dev/loop7 like
    Mounting /dev/loop7 on /target
    * these 5 messages from the kernel appear:
    (all prefixed with Apr 27 11:39:20 kernel: [ 250.140000])
    XFS: bad magic number
    XFS: SB validate failed
attempt to access beyond end of device
    loop7: rw=0, want=258, limit=256
    isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=loop
    * finally: Unable to mount loop device

mount says (I hope I have copied the most important lines):

fusectl on /sys/fs/fuse/connections type fusectl (rw)
    /dev/sda2 on /host type vfat
    /dev/loop0 on /cdrom type iso9660 (ro)
none on / type ramfs (rw)

Make sure that the img files are strictly smaller than 4GB, larger files are not supported by vfat. Reinstall via wubi, then before rebooting, copy any other file of 3-4Gb over root.img. See if that fixes it.

    Ok!

Firstly, I checked the files that Wubi installer has created before rebooting (i.e. while it was showing its final question for reboot).

    ubuntu-7.04-alternate-i386.iso is 712 MB
    C:\wubi\disks\home.img is 2048 MB
C:\wubi\disks\root.img is 129 kB <- appears to be too small
    C:\wubi\disks\swap.img is 770 MB

Then, I removed the root.img and made a copy of home.img that I renamed to root.img.

And it finally installs and works (just the keyboard layout was not initialized but that is easy to change)!!!

    Many thanks,
    Nikolaus
