    Lightbulb Projects and Project Leaders

I think that we agree that our primary goal is to eliminate bug #1. Evangelism, Nonprofit work, education, are all part of this. So... We need to figure out what projects we wish to pursue and who will lead the different initiatives. Part of the leadership role on projects will be to maintain the wiki for that project, I will also grant rights to the various leaders here. I think that I can set up admin rights to team leaders in Launchpad so that they can communicate project status here on the forums as well as through Launchpad.

    Some suggested projects are:
    Computer Donation Programs
    Converting Education Entities
    Education and Support
    Press, Media, and Public Relations
    ISO Distribution

That's a quick list and there is a bunch more....

If we put these in place and start making headway, we can apply to get official status, and reap the benefits that go with that (more support directly from Canonical).

Let's talk about this. I for one would be willing to lead the Press, Media, and Public Relations. Any other volunteers?

    Re: Projects and Project Leaders

I posted a list of my previous Linux targets here. I would like to lead a project that involves working with a few of the NPOs that I mentioned, My primary interest is NTR. After that would come the MALT CVG, Open Borders, and then the North Light Community Center.

I am particularly interested in these NPOs because they already have strong bonds within their communities. Besides providing PCs to low-income families, NTR also provides a "Bring a Computer Workshop" once a month to help people fix their PCs. As of a few months ago, NTR is now open to selling Linux-based laptops in their thrift store. I see NPOs like NTR as fertile ground for our cause.

Ultimately, my plan is to get them to start using Ubuntu. NTR is tricky because they are using a lot of really old hardware. Like 133 MHz for their laptops. I had to use Damnsmall and Puppy for the installs. OTOH, the MALT CVG has fewer yet higher end PCs and they are open to Linux-based thin clients on their network.

As for a general plan, here's a start:
    1. Come up with a tech support plan (an existing thread)
    2. Provide Linux presentations to their volunteers / staff
    3. Commit x hours of volunteer time to their cause
    4. Install Ubuntu on their PCs
    5. Project team members meet 2 times a month (not mandatory)

BTW, I don't need to be project leader. If team members would like to vote on a project leader, we can do it now and then every 3 months. I can take a short term lead until we get enough team members. At that point, we can vote.

Bret, is this what you were thinking of?

I'm interested in participating in the Computer Donation Program. I am certainly open to leading the project as well, which for now I think would entail keeping track of who has what 'territory', making sure we all take a uniform approach in how we set up the machines, and coordinating what literature we supply to go along with the machines. In the future perhaps we would move on to actively seeking out donations from local businesses, etc, and finding ways to redistribute them.

perhaps someone figure out a golden image and put in the wiki all the settings and packages to install.
