I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
I love the speed and configurability of Linux. I love the bash shell. I love the power and lightness of Xfce. I love the stability of Zenwalk.

and beryl/compiz owns macs and vista. ubuntu is so customizeable. if only it could run games+adobe software, it would dominate the OS world.

The major and really cool things have all been mentioned 264949 times each, but right now using windows I see a small thing that I miss like hell (after what a month or 2 of Ubuntu):
Places!
Access all partitions and USB devices and whatever else I need at once without having to go through the start menu or switch back to desktop and use the my computer/my document shortcut from there - and at the bottom of the screen too minimizing mouse movements, too - IN LOVE :o) First time that thinkpads not having a windows button is a GOOD thing!
(The separation of places, system, and apps is a cool thing too, but it's places that is THE godsent)
Terminal, can actually do something... as opposed to that weak excuse of a command line they have in Windows XP.
Though maybe I just never learned to use it right... whatever, I've still got gcalctool and Synaptic going for me.
