Looking for some pretty specific software...

Hi I have two projects I am thinkig about and was wondering if there is software out there for these quite specific tasks...

    Task the first:
I'm looking for some sort of software for making mindmaps. Sort of. I want to graphically represent the connections between lots of things. Something a bit like liveplasma.com, but where you can set all the connections up yourself...

    Task the second:
I want to make a timeline. I have a list of dates of births and deaths and would like to arrange it into a timeline. I tried putting it in the OO spreadsheet thing, but its not very satisfactory...

Any help with either of these projects would be greatly appreciated...

I'm not 100% sure on this, but doesn't Gramps have a timeline thing for something like births / deaths. It would make sense if it did. Maybe you should check that out.

One of the best looking Mindmap programs that I use is Vym. It's in the repositories but on Dapper it's an older version. You can grab the source and compile or I think there is a RPM version you can use alien on and convert it to a deb for install. Lots of features on Vym like being able to export your map to html/xml, open office presentation and other formats.

I get dependency errors when I try to install that, but I have the packages installed already
(it looks for pygobject, I have python-gobject installed)

when you try to install what?

note: when you are compiling from source, you need to install the "dev" version of the package. in your case, that would be the python-gobject-dev package.

You could use Labyrinth for mapping tool

And just in case if you are interested in genealogy program

you could use Gramps which is in the repository.

For mindmaps you could also try CmapTools.

Or freemind as an open-source alternative to Cmaptools.
