How do I start/stop Apache?

Hello,

I'm very new to running a web server... never done it before. I followed a very simple Apache tutorial, and with a little tweaking and help from a knowledgeable friend, got my server up and running.

My question is, how do I stop Apache from running? And what do I do to restart it? It seems that it's running by default everytime I boot into Ubuntu, and though I understand that would usually be the desired default behavior for someone running a webserver, it's not what I want.

I want my server to be up and running only occasionally, when I want to serve large files to business clients. Aside from that, I don't want Apache running.

For some reason, simply typing "apache2" into a terminal causes the following error message:
Quote:
apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName
(13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80
(13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down
Unable to open logs
I was kind of hoping that would start the server, but it seems it's always running.

Thanks for any help you may have!
