    "sudo chmod a+w /mnt/harddrive" doesn't work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Code:
    sudo chmod 777 /mnt/<mountpoint>

    you will want to do

    Code:
    sudo chmod -R 777 /media/external
The -R parameter gives full permissions to all files/folders within the drive.
