Re: How To: Make Your Own Ubuntu Repository DVDs

I have just tried to download the Ubuntu Hardy repo as per the tutorial. This is what happened. Sorry alot more code.
    Code:
    michael@michael-desktop:~$ debmirror --nosource -m --passive --host=archive.ubuntu.com --root=ubuntu/ --method=ftp --progress --dist=hardy,hardy-security,hardy-updates,hardy-backports, --section=main,restricted,universe,multiverse --arch=i386 ~/UbuntuRepos --ignore-release-gpg
    Mirroring to /home/michael/UbuntuRepos from ftp://anonymous@archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu//
    Arches: i386
    Dists: hardy,hardy-security,hardy-updates,hardy-backports
    Sections: main,restricted,universe,multiverse
    Passive mode on.
    Checking md5sums.
    Will clean up AFTER mirroring.
    Pdiff mode: use.
Attempting to get lock, this might take 2 minutes before it fails.
    Get Release files.

That is where it stopped and I am unable to get any further at this time. Feisty was soooo easy, Gutsy eventually came good when they fixed the bug in one of the files, I am hoping they catch this one in Hardy soon and fix it to because having the repos on hand makes things so much easier.

EDIT: The Medibuntu Repository download works. The Canonical download doesn't and has similar code as the Ubuntu download. I think the problem might be in the files on the Ubuntu and Canonical servers. Maybe somethings not there or not setup properly yet.

Re: How To: Make Your Own Ubuntu Repository DVDs

    Thanks for the head's-up, k3lt01.

[edit]OK. Tutorial completely fixed. Everything should work as before. I tried using the Gutsy Gibbon debpartial from the Ubuntu repositories. It installs well on Hardy Heron. All three sources (Hardy's, Canonical's and MediBuntu's repositories) work fine.[/edit]

    The tutorial is back online.

Re: How To: Make Your Own Ubuntu Repository DVDs

I'm new to all this, but a set of repositories on DVD sounds like a great idea to me! Thing is, with the net connection I have, it's not close practical to download on this scale.

Which is, er, why I want the stuff on DVD on the first place!

If it's not off topic for this thread, is there anywhere I can order a set of DVD's, (I'm in the UK, so somewhere reasonably local would save postage).

I checked out some sites that sell distros on CD, but I can't find repositories for sale.

    Cheers,
    Nick

Hi Bob, its working fine for me now to. Excellent stuff now I can show my friends the brilliance that is Ubuntu and they can see everything that is available.

Starbase, I don't know about buying the Repo's on DVDs. Have you taken a look at the Ubuntu website? if that's no luck then maybe when people have got the entire set downloaded someone will send you a copy for the price of the DVDs and Postage. What version of Ubuntu are you using?

Re: How To: Make Your Own Ubuntu Repository DVDs

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I did find one place selling the repositories on DVD's, but based in the states which normally means 2-3 weeks for a disk to arrive. (I really don't know why it should be so long, I seriously think someone must check this stuff to see there is nothing top secret being mailed...)

The outfit is here, in case anyone else is interested:
    https://on-disk.com/

I think I am going to bite the bullet and tie up my net connection for a week to get the data!

As for the version, I'm still dithering, but it's looking like I'll go for 8.04 64 bit, with the current price of RAM, and my fondness for graphics stuff, I can do a lot if I can access more than 4 Gb!

Hi BobSongs, this is a very useful HOWTO, but I would like to know if it is possible to download ONLY the updates of the repositories without having in a local drive (for example) the repositories previously downloaded.

    Thanks again, for the HOWTO!!!!

Oh Yeah, by the way, the APTonCD works great until you run(sudo apt-get clean), then I guess the cache file is gone......like most things, I learnt it the hard way.

Keep reading the whole tutorial. You'll find out how to download the updates.

Since debmirror cannot know what you've downloaded so far without first checking the destination folder, you see how important it is to leave all the files intact and do the update.

Again: scroll down the tutorial. I edit it constantly and never leave anything out. There's no need to ever go through the following posts in order to get the complete picture.
