Do as they say and use -s or -i.

Seems pretty easy, I could make a Qt application with a GUI for new users to do this, it would be something Ubuntu might need to have preinstalled.

Ok about GUI's and newer users, but when restoring, a GUI isn't (always) available, so the commandline method always has an advantage.

What are the dangers of excluding /etc/fstab and grub.cfg?

If this is a dumb question - I'm a newbie!!!

None. grub.cfg is recreated every time you run update-grub, and /etc/fstab you can recreate by hand.

Question Re: Howto: Backup and restore your system!

whoa man....i did it all. backed up in /

    their was an error though...

"exiting with failure status for previous errors"

but I had more space used as shown in system information's "file systems" tab than before.

but no archives in / !!

even searching for files didnt help!

did exactly the command for making tar.gz archive you posted ,only including "--exclude=/media"

    now....where to find it?
    m clueless.
