    Hi there

I attempted the backup using your instructions. However, it is also backing up the excluded directories. Any idea why? I excluded the ones that were already included in the code you supplied, and also added my music and videos folders. But it seems to be backing them all up.

    thanks

    Vijay.

When you specify the excludes you need to do it like --exclude='/path/to/exclude/*' not --exlucde/path/to/exclude. And yes, you need the quotes.

Amazing Job! I am going to use this tutorial to back up my system to a FREENAS server!

I thought this was a good tutorial, but I have decided it is not for me. The backup stopped in the middle, having used a good amount of space, and I would now like to get rid of it. I used the code in the first post and wonder what I should use now for elimination.

    Thanks

Addendum. I had to reinstall, which of course resolved the problem,

Would be grateful to have a link to backup.tgz and a virtual machine as a prove to check this procedure.

Re: Howto: Backup and restore your system!

    Hi,

My situation is a little different. I have two partitions and I would like to test certain updates on the second partition before applying them on my main Ubuntu installation. I made a backup and untarred it on my second partition. After updating grub, it showed the two installations, but somehow, it doesn't matter which one I choose, i end up on the original Ubuntu installation that was backed-up in the first place.

Anyone have any suggestions what could be causing this and how I could fix it?

    Thanks in advance.
